Not being an English teacher, I rarely worry about being excessively verbose in my writings.....except when faced with a preparing a manuscript for a journal with word limits. That boundary condition really forces ones to be both crafty and concise.....

Leaving out spaces between words is not what is meant by, "Compact precise expression without wasted words--succinct." (I see your humor and am giving it back at you.)

Consider our two different paths in life Murph, you an English teacher (word master?) and me writing procedures for the aerospace industry (technical master?)

If one of your students turned in an essay similar to John Cage's 4'33" how would you grade him; A+ for the most succinct essay ever written or F- for failing to turn in the assignment? Sometimes verbose is better than succinct.

My first procedure came back from my boss with more than 50% of the text crossed out. I had written at great length how the test set worked, how the guided missile worked, what was being tested and why. The boss had written a succinct note on the front of my procedure, "Wayne, we don't have time to read a novel!" Sometimes succinct is better than verbose.

So, my beautiful five page procedure was reduced to one page which said something like:

Step 1) Connect Agilent 34401A Digital Multimeter (or equivalent) to Unit Under Test (UUT) power supplies (PS) and verify readings per Table 1.

Step 2a) If PS's meet specifications in Table 1, stamp UUT's test record (Form 125925B) as, "Voltage Pass."

Step 2b) If any PS does not meet Table 1 specifications, fill out a rework order (Form RW) and return UUT to integration.

I would suggest that we write on MTJ anyway we feel like. If you are comfortable using as many words as come to mind, you should use them. If I feel like striking 90% of my words (as I often do) before posting, then I will. The way we use words is part of our personality and we should let it show on a forum like this. [Opinion]

To respond in a serious tone (the first occasion I am being so in this regard, here, currently,) I agree w/ you fully. And believe it or not, my yammerings are edited for succinctness (I had to look that one up to make sure it was an actual word) and readability (that one,too); also, as I've learned here recently, I have to watch how much I let hang-out, esp. when it comes to musical tastes and inquiries . (As a result [ of said admonishment] , I have just now started a post on art ; so much for my learning to watch my yapper [!] )
Murph, the guy who appreciates some sentimental music and a whole lotta arts-fartsy stuff.

I don't,IMHO,have a writing style.I try to change it to fit circumstances and I think Murph does that much better than I.
Some of you may remember that some spelling things bother me but I have learned to ignore them as I hope others do mine.
Most importantly,we make our points on MTJ and again IMHO have the best model railroad forum of all.That is NOT open for discussion.
