Thank's Hev. The American LaFrance is another engine with a certain elegance to the design. Today's engines tend to have Lego block style.

Jon:

They are a pair of railroad coach seats; heavy as hell!

They live in the mudroom/side-porch/sun-room. We rebuilt the porch a couple years ago; getting a little saggy and rotten in the underpinnings. We jacked the roof up, swept out everything underneath and replaced it all. Now, we can open up all the windows in spring and fall, and I insulated it so we can heat it in winter with a little ceramic heater and run a small window-box rattler to A/C the place in the dead-heat of summer. Never could find a couple reading chairs that fit, though.

On to the next project, when we gutted the room to build the library, one of the things that came out was those seats. They were destined to go down in the cellar for the "guys" to sit in whilst supervising the proceedings on "train night". After a fair amount of grunting, the seats made it as far as the porch on their way round the back (there was no way they were going down the cellar stairs inside the house).

That's when the light-bulb went on. They were a perfect fit on the porch. My wife and I can sit out there of a summer's evening and read. Worked out well.

I need the hobos to assist on a column I'm writing. Which movie and which actor typifies American cool for you? At the moment I'm thinking James Dean in Rebel without a Cause, but I'd appreciate your input. And if you can, please explain why your choice is the coolest. Thanks, lads.

Clint Eastwood as "Dirty Harry" in the film of the same name. The sequels got progressively more cartoonish, but the original set the standard for the hard boiled, unflappable detective genre.

Sharp as a tack from the opening scene where he breaks up a bank robbery "Now in all the excitement, I can't remember if I fired 5 shots or 6, but this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful hand gun in the world, and it can blow your head clean off, so before you reach for that gun, you want to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?!!!!"

Hard to believe it was way back in 1972!

A yet to be made movie known as, "The Miles Davis Movie," because Miles Davis defined "Cool" with his "Birth of the Cool" album.
Likely actor to play Davis: Don Cheadle. Cheadle is practicing his trumpet playing and chomping at the bit for the chance to play Davis.
Don't expect to see this movie anytime soon, the movie industry's best customers are young adults. They want to see "Iron Man" or "The Avengers."
The only people who would go to "The Miles Davis Movie," are me and Roger. That's cool, we will have our choice of any seat in the theater.

Wayne, interestingly enough I mention Miles in my column. Maybe not the way you had hoped. Clint is also mentioned.

Dean was also pretty cool in "Giant".
The Eastwood "spaghetti' westerns.
Lee Marvin at times.
Kathryn Hepburn.
Jodie Foster.

IMHO the idea of "cool" varies with the age of the persons involved.

Yes,Wayne.I would watch a movie about Miles Davis.
