Weekend Photos - July 2023

Postby healey36 » Sat Jul 01, 2023 6:56 am

Alright, started off July by finishing the four-square project:

A few spots that should be fixed, but probably best to just leave it alone. I have another one, different design, partially assembled, but I think I'll defer that until I get a few other projects sorted. In the meantime, better salt that sidewalk...brrr.

That came out looking GREAT. (Almost right out of A CHRISTMAS STORY) A nice warm glow of the lights through the windows.

Now you need a 1938 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan for the drive way.

Excellent! Just excellent! You have to be really happy with the results. It even has the illusion of snow fall. I’ll bet if you put a light grayish board in the background covered it with glitter it would look as if it was snowing. I’m always happy to create work for others to do.

Thanks very much. I agree with you, Hondo; definitely needs a leg-lamp. What's funny is the family that owns the actual house, they put a leg-lamp in the window!

Depending upon the viewing angle, the glitter-effect can be really oppressive. A coating of snow/ice was what we were going for. Not real happy with the white on the top of the hedge...might revisit that.

Is the light we are seeing in the windows from the LED key chain lights you bought from Amazon / Ebay ?

What is the hedge material. Maybe some kind of scouring pad. ?

Is that a mailbox by the front door ?

Yup, those are cut-down Scotch scour pads for the hedge. I had to double them up as the standard thickness seems to be 3/8-inch and I wanted something a bit deeper than that. I found pads on Amazon listed as having thickness of "0.8 inches", but when they arrived, they were the regular 3/8-inch thickness. I know I have seen them at least a 1/2-inch thick, but couldn't find any anywhere. So I cemented two pads together, front-to-back, then cut them into lengths after they dried thoroughly. The color was probably about right for a yew hedge, so I left them their "natural" color, dry-brushed them a bit with white craft paint and attempted a bit heavier across the tops. Last step was to brush them again with a little Mod Podge, then sprinkle some of that glitter on them.

I have a couple packs of small "bottle-brush" trees, from which I used two. I cut the little round wood bases off, than just cemented them on. A bit more Mod Podge and some glitter finished them off.

The inside light is a single bulb from a string of LEDs (the rest of the string is hidden behind the partition). This is the same string I used to light the houses on the Christmas display. Each bulb throws off a decent amount of light, but nothing too glaring. The keychain light is too big to fit inside; I'll have to get one of those $78 versions Wayne found if I need to fit it inside this

Haha, yes the mailbox is just a little piece of basswood cut to size, painted black, then glued to the wall next to the front door.

The wife posted a pic on Facebook and got a bzillion likes and many comments, including one from the family we know who used to live in the house. The mom asked to buy it, but I said just come by and pick it up. A lot of people talked about those cardboard houses that you could buy at the five-and-dime around the holidays...I'm glad it struck a chord with people.

Hope everyone has a great 4th!

In the big box of stuff recently dropped off was a Lionel set #98 from 1925-1927. It's headed by a 253 electric profile loco. It's pretty rough:

As much as I loathe repainting stuff, this one might be a candidate. The shell has a mixture of chipped paint and splashed-on paint, and both ends have their tabs broken. Not too many bits missing; especially nice to have the handrails, as those are hell to find. New headlights, not too tough. Motor turns freely and the wheels look to be okay, so that's an upside. Check out that homemade couple adapter. The coaches are in worse shape.

I'm talking myself into it.

The fact that it has survived at all in such reasonable shape is amazing in its own right.

I agree, which is why I abhor repainting anything anymore. I'm confident that this set has sat in a box in an attic for at least 50-60 years, perhaps from the original owner, or perhaps passed down to him from a relative. Once I get it apart, I can sort out my options.

Healey,
"The mom asked to buy it, but I said just come by and pick it up." That's very generous of you. Nice!
