Walmart sells nylon cord that looks right on Lionel Cranes.
A closer look:
These are the smaller cords on the card. The left one is brown, the right one black.
The upper scale is 1/64 of an inch per division, the lower scale is 1 mm per division where the cord is (0.5mm to the left of the cords.)
The cords are about 1 mm (0.039 inch) in diameter or 1.9 inches in 1:48 scale.

#3 picture hanging wire is perfect.

Country Gray is an interesting choice of cable color.
In most steel mill pictures, everything looks black.
Looks about the same color as picture hanging wire
Re: Recommendation wanted for wire rope
I’ve used stretchable cord from the jewelry dept. at Michael’s for stringing telegraph poles. It works pretty well, and has enough give to save it from overly exuberant spectators.

I agree. The picture hanging wire in the photo is galvanized steel wire. The normal zinc-plated coating is dull gray in color with a matte finish.

Wayne, I applaud your resourcefulness!
Thank you.

Look into dacron string/thread. I use this for making bow strings. It comes in many colors.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes
