Greg, pretty much the same here. A primary shopper of the secondary venues. I like to see what I am getting.

They still do but with newer equipment. The Kawasaki cars that replaced the PCCs are now about 30 years old, I suspect that SEPTA* will be looking for replacements soon.

It all goes away sooner or later. I haven't found anything I like better than the old PRR Brunswick Green and Tuscan. I will be going with it one of these days!

That’s pretty funny on the 3rd rails. I have 2 of them and I run those quite a bit. Here’s a DM&IR 2-10-4 with a pretty good haul. They allegedly don’t pull that well, but I am happy with how it pulls.

The Third RAil Pennsy Q1 is a hunk of Junk Will not make any switch The BB3 Rats sound like static and can pull 2 cars They stay in the case. Their newer diesels are pretty smooth runners but I am not a fan of the drive system Time will tell how they hold up

Why do you keep them then?

back in the late 1990s when I was still living in Kansas I had a train shop I used to buy from order me 2 3rd rail brass freight cars when I was chasing brass.

The cars are beautiful but the trucks disintegrated on both of them. An outside braced boxcar and an offset hopper

Maybe using brass or delrin trucks would be better?

I used Weaver trucks on my tank car that came with the broken trucks. Got it for small money and knew they were shot.
As for 3rd Rail steam, best thing to do is repair all the loose detail parts, stripping the shell if necessary, then locate it on a 3 rail chassis or older 2 rail like KTM or Westside for two railers. Only reason to buy them these days is if they make a prototype you want that has never been modeled.

Nobody ever made a Q1 besides 3rd Rail Looks good in the cabinet The Rats look nice Too small to do any kind of upgrades but were the engines that ran near my house when I was young and just cant seem to part with them.

I just cancelled a GP9 order from 3rd rail He sent an invoice that pissed me off The engine price was over 700 which isnt a problem but he added $60 bucks for shipping and a $30 "container fee" WTF is that 90 bucks to ship an engine that couldnt cost more than 30 tops to ship.

I guess those are good reasons; I slowly weed out anything that under performs or irritates me with that "junk" label. That the Q1 won't take switches is interesting - that wheelbase seems to be one beyond the reality for most modeler's track. The Rats probably need weight added; tungsten works well.

I remember that all too well.

Shipping is sky high these days. It cost avout $2.00 per $100 of insurance. We had a few container fees go up. 2019 it cost $5000 from chine to Ny. And $500. Ny to Bucks County. 75 miles and 3 hours of dock time. That covered 6 hours of driver time and fuel. 2022 that same container route was $20,000 and $1,500 for trucking from port to us. 2023 containers are around $12,000 from China
