OK, so I am in the market for a TMCC Alco S-2 diesel switcher. These all date from the early 2000's; the Legacy versions are later. The livery is unimportant as it will be repainted into another Weirton Steel unit, but it must function correctly.
Someone offered me a Legacy version so just for giggles I looked it up the product #. Here's what I found:

Beauty, eh?
Actually it is a drop dead gorgeous Premier engine. I know. My first and only MTH locomotive was a Reading S-2 (PS2). It was my test engine when I was trying to build a layout with DCS.

MTH actually catalogued a Weirton Steel S-2 with PS-3. I don't know many were actually produced, product number was 20-21258-1. There is one on eBay listed at $499.99. If you have to use in command mode add another $200-$300 for ERR replacement boards.

I was looking at the price. Ridiculous for the secondary market by a private seller. Looks used actually and advertised as a little dusty.

Be aware, almost everything that that seller lists is overpriced by a factor of two to three.

But buyers buy his stuff regardless. Well over 400 positive feedbacks in just the last month. I don't get it.

I saw that! It's gorgeous and from the catalog photos appears to be the correct color for the era. The sounds are probably correct as well.
I am pleased to report that I have a deal pending for a TMCC version (same loco that became WSX 208).

There are obviously a lot of folks with disposable income willing to spend it on trains. Manufacturers, dealers, and individuals seem to have buyers even at these inflated prices.
I was watching this item that started out at 99 cents. Maybe not surprising it sold for what it did given it may be one of a kind. I was not aware something like this ever existed.

hirailfarms says it all. He comes up with a lot of obvious fakes.
I don't see any Kughn signed document in the pics. General Mills got the factory prototypes. The machining looks rather fresh. It could be authentic for all I know but I would not bank on it. It sold for far less than what a known, authenticated factory prototype of this nature would have sold for.
