Not Bad Yankee

https://www.ebay.com/itm/PREWAR-LIONEL- ... 3978094620

Not bad. Fantasy paint....1942 catalog, never produced. Repaint, looks good.
But:

For collectors, repaints drops it off the collector scale. No boxes hurts, too. Originally 616.
Here is an evilbait 616 set, with partial boxes:

https://www.ebay.com/c/1323947945

and here:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lionel-Prewar- ... 4260129481

So, value for original is 300-350, repaint what, half that?

That’s pretty interesting, and given that gunmetal 616 sets are not uncommon, I wouldn’t feel bad about someone trying to make a concept piece in a pretty nice way. Hopefully the bubble-wrap didn’t muck up the paint too bad.

They refer to that red, white and blue as a restoration.
IMO a restoration puts it back to looking like the original.
I would think the name for this is a repaint.

If it truely was high grade, I would get it. The marks on the roof and vestibules kill it. He's got runner grade on his hands.

But:

Amateur repaint with a rattle can and home center masking tape. Something you strip and repaint correctly. No way is it worth anything close to what he's asking. Junk price is all it's worth.

That's what I was trying to say without stomping on anyone's preconceived ideas.
Showed a couple of original examples and prices (still too high), deducted half for repaint, take off $50 for no boxes, you're about $100, if you;re even interested in the amount of work.
