I am looking for a high quality headlamp that won't crap out on me. I had one from Harbor Freight (Quantum). It worked for about 18 months and then became flaky. New batteries didn't solve the problem, so there must be something loose in it. I had it partially apart but can't discover the cause.

In any case, I'm disgusted with it and wondering if you might know of one that works reliably.

My experience has been those are throw-aways, last a year at best. I've had problems with the head-band losing its stretchability (sic) as well. Whether I spent $10 or $29, it didn't seem to matter. On my 4th one now.

I have a membership and have never been disappointed with anything I've purchased from REI.

Where/how is the thing to be used, spelunking or at a table working on models? If it's the latter, a good swing arm lamp would likely do the job and last the life of the buyer.

An LED Maglite and duct tape will also do the job.

Until you have actually used one, try not to knock it. These are incredibly useful devices. LED lighting makes this possible, bright white light, low power consumption, light weight batteries. Our dentist has switched to using these and I see more and more general repair persons using them. Both of your hands are free, the light is literally in front of you and it's actually harder to get stuff in the way to block the light without also blocking your vision. The only complaint I have is a lack of peripheral vision. The light is so bright that you tend to ignore almost anything else that is not being directly illuminated.

Don't confuse a little humor as a denunciation. However, if you are at a stationary work space, I'll take a good swing arm lamp. Stick a 100 watt rated LED bulb in it and you'll have plenty of light and your hands are free, same as the head band. If you're roving around then obviously the band is better. Most times there is more than one way to skin a cat. If you have never used a good swing arm, don't knock it.
