Weekend Photos - 07/05/2019

Postby healey36 » Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:13 am

Been accumulating ideas for a few projects once things settle down a bit. Saw these in the August 5, 1916 issue of Railway Review, drawings/photo for a lightly armored railroad car designed by the Standard Steel Car Company in 1916 for use by the Engineering Corps of the U S Army during the dispute with Mexico:

I've got a few beater Flyer cars that might be suitable for use as the underpinnings.

Other than that, did some minor repairs on the Lionel 2034 I picked up a while back. Need to throw some power to it and make sure everything is as it should be.

Spent a few days last week helping a friend bringing in the first hay-cutting of the season:

Late this year for the first cut...been so damn wet. Raked/dried it three times before we baled it. I miss the old balers, but my back probably doesn't.

Haven't seen or heard anything from Christopher since April...I fear he's turned out the lights on MTJ.

Do you have enough information on your Lightly Armored Railroad Car Healey, or would you like some more?
The car is mentioned in my copy of The Universal Book of Knowledge, copyright 1917.

If there are any other drawings, Wayne, those might be handy. A tinplate version certainly won't be precise by any stretch, more a loosely based interpretation.

I'm curious - how big of a book is The Universal Book of Knowledge, copyright 1917? With that pretentious title I could envision a thirty-volume set, each volume a foot-and-a-half thick...at least...

Look for a gondola with the right side rib arrangement to get the lower 1/2 of the sides set and build up rest of the sides in styrene. Cut the ends out and scratch ends in styrene. Could be a nice project!!!

Just checked Christopher's NE Rails Link and most of the recent photo posts are of images we've had the pleasure of seeing with a few exceptions, most notably a Jersey Central head on shot taken in the last week or so.

Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

I pulled out the shell of a Lionel 812 gondola the other day...looks like it might be suitable, although the Flyer version is a bit narrower and maybe a half-inch or so longer.

Which is closer to the plans?

I saw he also has some recent shots of some N-gauge gear...figured he might have made a run at that stuff for a bit.

Same drawing as you showed.

596 pages. there wasn't as much to know back then.
