Quiet this week, no layout action, but a few snaps. Maryland Midland covered hopper drag with SD40-2 3451 (former SP 8929) up front:

That's the former Sherwood Distillery in the background, once a premier distiller of Maryland rye whiskey. Rye's been making a bit of a comeback locally due to the efforts of Kevin Plank, CEO of Underarmour. I still prefer scotch.

Sarge sent a couple of old transformers over a few months back...here's one of them, a prewar Jefferson Midget:

They're still in business, although they don't make transformers for toy trains anymore. According to their website, they started manufacturing transformers for toys in 1915.

Taking a break from train related stuff. Saw the re-issued kit at a Model Cave in Yspi and decided to built it as a remembrance of my grandfather that served on one of these at Normandy as an electronics technician with radio/radar responsibilities.

Not quite done, kit was originally released by Varney (yes, the same Varney of HO fame) in late 45 with a carved wooden hull. They tooling traded hands with a vacuform hull and then an injection molded one. Now Round 2 makes them with retro box art under "The Lindberg Line".

Both the ship and the kit are pretty basic but the age of the tooling shows up in lots of flash, mold sinks, and ejector pin marks. That's where most of the time is going in terms of dealing with this. The only "detailing" I'm adding is the "roof" for the "flying" bridge and the replacement of the horribe frayed thread included in the kit for the railings. I'm using very fine music wire. Kit was a box scale model so the details have to be scratch built, its 1:245 scale :).

One other train related aspect. Prototypes were powered by two V-12 EMD 567 marine engines. Same basic power plant on several early EMD loco's.

Very cool. The Old Man went to sea in USS Chimaera (ARL-33), an LST converted into a repair ship. She was built by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company, then converted at Baltimore by one of the Fairfield yards. He caught the tail end of the war, but then spent a year in China, heading back to the States in '47. He always said she was miserable in heavy weather with that big flat bottom

They remind me of Great Lakes freighters.

The crews tended to refer to LST as Large Slow Target. They could only make 12 knots. The naval architect was a submarine designer and the vessels incorporated a lot of features from sub design including full double hull and ballast tanks. Of the 1000+ built only 41 were lost in combat. They had an incredible ventilation system that allowed the tanks to "warm up" before landing. The craft did what it was supposed to, cross open ocean, drive up onto a beach to deliver cargo and then winch itself back into open water when done. Not pretty, but pretty darn effective.

Any boat in the "amphibs" was a bad ride. The LSTs were much smaller than the LSD that I was on early in my Navy days. Both types were basically flat bottomed. The USS Cabildo, LSD 16 only drew 9' when unloaded, and we had a flank speed of 14 knots with the hammer down.

Sweet-looking Frogeye, George (Bugeye to us Yanks). Looks like a nicely refurbished car, perhaps set up for occasional extra-curriculars. Haven't seen LED headlamps applied before. Of all the Spridgets, the 1958-61 seems to draw the most looks (and money). Great day for a meet, thanks for posting.

I finished re-organizing my painting area by building one set of shelves for paint and one for brushes and other tools (glue, tape, sanding pads).

Here's the shelf I built using 1/4" masonite and wire shelving units from Lowe's.

I drilled a hole in the angle iron stiffener and fastened it to the shelf to hold it up.

Here's the filled up brush and tool shelf. It is attached to the spray booth.

This is the paint shelf, which is attached to the bookshelf. Capacity is 192 bottles of acrylic or craft style paint.

I think that you will find that as you build the layout and do scenery that you will consume much of that "stuff" under foot and slowly free up your actual work space.

Thanks Rufus. I think that is a lot of the problem, although I have stored some materials under the partially built tables. But I still have some half-done projects and tools lying around that need to get out of the way.

Anyway, I hope to get to some actual layout building soon.

I suspect that you may also come to the conclusion that you have numerous items that can be encouraged to find new homes during this process...unless you suffer from some extended form of separation anxiety,
