Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy Chase 5/19/19

Postby ogauge47 » Mon May 20, 2019 12:35 pm

Hey all! I just got back for a weekend trip out to Wyoming to shoot the eastbound deadhead of the Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy from Laramie to Cheyenne. UP FEF-3 844 came along for the ride too.

What are the things in the third photo on the left that look like three lights, or something, on a pole?
And the two things a little more distant that look almost like lower quadrant semaphores?

Two of the things are speaker horns. The third is a blue Mars light. I assume these are some kind of alarm system.

The more distant units are signal lamps, back side. I think those are just colored lights. They probably have the "darth vader" shades that the UP pioneered.

Google Earth shows a large quarry operation just up the grade and mostly to the right. I don't know if the horns/lights are tied to this facility.

Nice photos Lucas. I traveled up there too and came back with some video. 4014 is pretty impressive. I’ll be heading up to Sidney Nebraska 8/6 and 8/7 to do some chasing.
Video was at Harriman WY not Harrison as the title says.

Thanks. Next time I’ll need to find some windscreen material to cover the built in camera mic. Harriman was an old water/coal stop on a desolate dirt road 20 miles west of Cheyenne just over the Colorado Wyoming line except there were about a thousand people there. Hopefully the crowds will have had their fill on the next trip.

Kent,
Thanks for posting.
I wanted to wave as they went by.
Very impressive locos, all three.
I thought the train was also surprisingly quiet.
