Weekend Photos - 4/13/18

Postby christopher2035 » Thu Apr 12, 2018 11:14 pm

Traveling back from PA tomorrow morning, so thought I'd post this tonight :) Spent a few days up here w/ my 2 older kids going to Strasburg, watching some NS & going to Hershey Park. My wife couldn't make the trip, as she is due any day now.

NS Dash-9 9667 is in charge of 165 as it clears Green Hill on the Christiansburg District

The late evening setting sun reflects off the side of NS Dash-9 9314 as it leads 20T through PITL MP 151 in Port Royal, PA. The setting sun is also a perfect metaphor for the PRR signals that stand guard at this location. Thanks to mandated PTC installation, their time grows short.

Strasburg SW8 8618 ( ex CR 9618/exx PC/NYC 9618) make s a rare move past the RR museum of PA & across Gap Road to retrieve some MOW cars & return them to the yard.

NS Dash-9 9275 leads eastbound 12R up the rural Lurgan Branch at sunset in Shippensburg, PA

This is kind of train related, but too crazy not to share - The kids & I were setting up to shoot the last inbound Strasburg train of the day when Lorenzo notices a small flame coming from the top of the barn I was going to use as a backdrop for my shot. Within minutes, the whole barn was engulfed in flames. I called the FD & 27 trucks showed up! The barn collapsed but all the cows were able to get out safely & I believe nobody was hurt.

I don't usually keep test shots, but this one was still on the camera. This was about 15 min before the fire started -

Friday the 13th edition...keep your head down!

Wow, that was a big barn. Hate to see them go, especially the ones that have some history. We've lost a few nice ones here in the county, primarily through neglect.

Flipped you a PM, Christopher, re: Lurgan Branch...

Lovely photos Christopher.

This experience should encourage Lorenzo to have smoke detectors throughout his house when he grows up. Seriously.

My own youthful experiences with fire are described today in the NY TImes on-line for anyone interested in fire safety and institutional irresponsibility. Both my kids had carbon monoxide and smoke (combined photo-electric/ionization) detectors with them when they went off to college and then when they got their first apartments. My older son jokes he has the second largest smoke detector collection in the world after me :). Stay safe, warm and dry.

Christopher,
You are so lucky, no, fortunate that you have kind of job that allows you to travel to such great railroad places as you do. AND with your family.

Thanks Roger! It's a nice bonus to be able to stop off for some rail action when I'm traveling for work. This trip however, was vacation for the kids Spring break. I asked them where they wanted to go & they both said Strasburg! Not going to argue that :)
