Roger,

This is for you, especially. Go to the OGR Forum (I tried uploading the video using iCloud and failed, but it's over there).

Take a look and comment back here.

Very nice!!!!!
I did not get back to that area very often after 1975.
I did see a transition of transporting iron ore in partially loaded coal hoppers
to fully loaded ore hoppers. Saw a lot of changes in that time from 1940s t0 1970.
The memories of those times are off set by what I saw in the early 2000s
No wonder many model that period.

I am glad you enjoyed the video!

My father recalled that ore was transported in half-filled gondolas due to the weight.

One of the (little things) I'm also proud of it that I was able to back that train (not quite at that speed) the length of the layout back into the Staging Area without incident. That crossed about a dozen switches including a double cross-over.

Now that back-up move would be a good show.

Great video. Is the double slip a Ross product?

And the backdrop is awesome!!!

Yes, the double cross-over is a Ross product.

And I really couldn't be happier with the decision and my experiences in acquiring the backdrop. The effect is truly special.

Updated 2/23/2021:
  • I added a track feeder pair to the track in the fake ("Wile E. Coyote"-style) tunnel at the extreme western end of the Panhandle. This will allow me to park a lighted cabin car in the tunnel as if it is departing for points west (Indianapolis or St. Louis).
  • Drilled holes in the styrofoam and bench work for electrical lighting bus wires. These will power the HO-sized houses along the back wall of the layout behind the station.
  • Came to a decision regarding the area just east of the station. Originally, I wanted to fit a highway overpass across the tracks. The reality is there just isn't room for it. Cramming it in there would create the look I really am trying to avoid in this layout - jammed.

I like the cabin car idea. And you can turn it off to "show" that the train has moved on. Cool.
Without seeing it, I would bet you don't need an overpass. I don't recall one in Steubenville
during that time except the river bridges. But I could be wrong.
If I remember, you are going to have operating sessions so why make it harder?.
You have got to be having FUN. That's what a hobby is for.

Roger, thanks for the great suggestions.

The only overpass in the area was a short bridge for the Panhandle over the extreme north end of 6th Street. And yeah, that overpass would make it a bit harder to see down the track.

Updated 03/07/2021:

I have been concentrating on the hillside scenery above the Steubenville train station. Part of this will consist of a series of 6 houses along Highland Avenue. The photos show the prototype, a couple of Google Earth shots, and my mock-ups for the hillside and houses. The houses themselves will be HO structures with about 1.5" extending out of the backdrop.

At this point, I've acquired 3 of the houses. Two of them are under construction with components in the paint booth. I'm waiting on the others (on back-order from Walthers). I must say that I am much more comfortable with O than HO sized models - too small.
