Scale Trains buys MTH HO/S tooling

Mike has never admitted to making a mistake as far as I've heard. It's always someone else's fault

With that attitude, he's a shoo-in for Congress!

You should get a hobby, like philately. That was not political but simply a joke that Mike might find an optimal occupation post pandering to the toy train community.....

Methinks that youse guys are making a hobby of oneupsmanship.
That is OK with me but I hope no one goes too far and screws up the best in many ways train forum.

As we move towards June 2021, I find “the long goodbye” of MTH to be quite fascinating, in a Titanic sort of way. Consider:
Human nature can be quite strange.

- Even as its status as a technological orphan solidifies, some hobbyists are scrambling to join the “brotherhood” of DCS. The price of DCS remotes has doubled or even tripled. It’s like watching lemmings rush to the sea. Others, with nowhere to go technologically, are attempting to stockpile DCS components.
- Even with the first funnel underwater (so to speak), some of the MTH fanboys (particularly on other forums) are insisting that the company will be saved and / or survive. Just last Sunday I heard unsubstantiated rumors that the employees are in the process of buying the O gauge tooling. Is there even anything to buy?
- In the midst of all this, MTH continues to announce “new” products (old warehouse stock repainted in the hot livery du jour) in an obvious attempt to wring every last dollar out of their Jonestown-like followers.

My, my. This thread sure has wandered far afield from the OP's post.
The topic was the disposition of MTH's HO and S tooling, locomotive models derived from which will be controlled via DCC or conventionally. By the way, the tooling for both is very good. Neither DCS nor Mike's personality has any relevance going forward.
Respectfully,
Bob

They fear TMCC will become standard of the world and they are right.

Looks like Atlas will acquire some of the rolling stock and diesels. I hope someone gets the steam tooling...I don’t want no stinking diesels

Re: Scale Trains buys MTH HO/S tooling
Thus begins the dismemberment of the train company known as MTH. It will be interesting to see if and when and how long they continue to use DCS in their locos, and whether Lionel will continue to allow use of TMCC in Atlas locos if they produce a competing system. My guess is no.
Doesn't seem likely someone will pick up the Realtrax and ScaleTrax systems. What about the transformers and steam locos? Suspect there is additional news to come on these issues. Atlas already has a track system, but does not produce transformers except for one obscure transformer. Be interesting to see if they sell train sets too. They certainly have had minimal activity in the O gauge three rail market in recent years. Be interesting to see how aggressively they re-enter the market with this tooling.

Re: Scale Trains buys MTH HO/S tooling
buying tooling and producing product are two different things. You could buy the molds and shelf them. keep them out of your competition's lineup. Might be cheaper to buy a handful of molds than to loose millions in sales to company X. You could buy the molds and tell the seller. " we will give you X amount for every piece made. Then never make piece one.

Wow, Atlas acquired DCS? So their management is now smoking crack? Is that what we can conclude?
