Weekend Photos - March 2021
Re: Weekend Photos - March 2021
Healey, do you think your castle would be enhanced with a couple of flags or banners on the towers?
Re: Weekend Photos - March 2021
Definitely, but I need to find something suitable for poles. I have some Evergreen tubing that would probably work, but it's pretty old and has bowed over time. The other concern about adding flags/banners is the potential, for a clumsy ox such as myself, to be constantly knocking them off. Flags themselves are easy to find on the internet...just print and mount.
One thing I wish I'd done is cement a narrow horizontal "walkway" on the back-side of the ramparts/walls so a few dudes could stand up there and be seen from outside the castle walls. I could probably still do that, but fitting them and painting them would be a bit fiddly with everything assembled. The other thing is the walls should be crenulated (similar to the original), I just couldn't figure out how to make a job of it. The gate and wall structures are fashioned from built up layers of corrugated or foam-core, so cutting uniform notches would be a challenge. I gave it a try, but it tended to look a bit ragged.
I think I may have found a temporary/occasional home for this thing. A mate of mine that paints wargame figures professionally says he could use it for a backdrop for photos of some of his work. Meanwhile, the liquor store keeps calling asking if I want another load of the single-faced corrugated beer company displays. I probably have a life-time supply from the first visit.

If they give you beer with the displays it might be worth it,

Note that I used the word "might". 1 bottle of any brew from Founders would totally eclipse anything in any amount from Miller

Tore the house apart a few days ago looking for a box of accumulated junk picked up over the years at various meets. I remembered there being a four-wheel Marklin tender in one of the $10-gets-the-whole-box deals acquired some two decades ago:

It looks a lot better than I remember it. I thought it might be a match for a Marklin 970 clockwork I found recently, but no dice. A friend of mine who collects European prewar tells me the tender for the 970 is a 9790, and this is an 899 (which looks like a nicer tender).
To be honest, I'd go ahead and pair them except the 899 tender is 2-1/4 inches wide, while the cab on the 970 is only 1-3/4 inches wide...looks silly.
Now I have a loco without a tender and a tender without a loco, and I'm too anal-retentive to leave it be.

Been looking at YouTube videos on how to paint panel lines on model airplanes. I wanted to give it a try, but I don't have any built airplanes laying around to experiment on. Found this battered Tootsietoy Jag 120 in one of the bins, which has some detail that looked interesting to play with:

Stripped it, gave it a shot of Tamiya gloss white, then started messing around. Lots more experimentation required. For instance, I used a water-based tinting ink for the panel lines, which didn't seem to work too well. Could be the ink, or it could be the pigment is rolling up because it's on enamel...not sure. Most of the recommendations I read said to use acrylic for tinting, enamel for the base coat, which seems counterintuitive to me, but whatever.
Tried to make a windscreen from a bit of thin plexi I have here. A bit too tall, and it should have a bend in the center. I've always wondered why Tootsietoy didn't include a windscreen in their casting. Can't be because it would look bad

Hot water, like the guy on OGR that rips everyone a new one? Lovely locomotive, for sure.
