I doubt it...probably some irrationally exuberant locals looking for building materials or firewood. The last time I was out there, some five years ago, the timber lining remained generally intact. There was talk of the portals being fenced off to prevent entry, as have been the other nearby tunnels (Indigo and Kessler), to protect a large population of hibernating bats. Me, I'm more afraid of the timber rattlers than the bats.

On a totally different topic, Rufus had posted a shot of an early "LCL" container with an arched top over on the traction photo thread. I didn't recall noticing that before, which got me to poking around. Saw these photos in Railway Age, April 8, 1921:

My understanding is the New York Central was a pioneer in the development and deployment of the container concept. These look to be of wood, in large and small sizes, featuring an arched top. Very cool.

Here's a few MTH LCL containers stuffed in a refurbed Lionel 812 gondola on the basement pike:

Slightly rounded tops here.

I added a stove-pipe to the yardmaster's office...figured the guy deserved some heat, plus it just needed something. I thought I had some cast metal caps somewhere around here, but couldn't find them.

I gave the office a shot of Rustoleum clear gloss, which didn't seem to do much besides highlight the trim bits that were cemented on using a glue-stick. The color seems a bit more vivid, and it probably provides a bit of protection for the print, but it didn't do much to make it look more tinplate-like.

Digging around in the Toy Trains stack, found a "cutout" for a telephone shed. Very simple:

Image

The magazine graphic had the shed in white with red trim and a red door; using MS Paint, I "repainted" it yellow and made the door green. Paint is a bit tedious for such things, basically a pixel grab. I made a line pole from a bit of dowel stained with Minwax. I have some insulators around here too (probably with the stove-pipe caps). I might add one or two at the top, if and when I drop a line, or I might bag the pole and just drop a line from an adjacent utility pole.

I think a tool shed would complete the trifecta...

A tool shed would be nice.
I think they DO look tinplatish, at least in the photo.
Very nice.

Main Line // Huff 'n' Puff used to make a kit for that car with the containers; since bought by LaBelle I've not seen any production of those kit lines, :( :( :( :(

I've never built a car kit, but that would be one that is of interest. The history of the LCL concept, development, and deployment has always interested me. The containers are frequently marked "LCL Company" or "LCL Corporation", yet I can't find any information on such an entity.

I have a few car kits here, one of which, an All Nation 40' steel box car, Sarge sent over. I have a few others that are all wood. They all look a bit intimidating, but I'll have to take a crack at one eventually.

An All Nation 40' steel box car might have been the 1st kit I ever built. 1st one was a bit of a challenge just sussing out the assembly but not hard by any means. Built many after that and they were pretty easy once I had one under my belt. Wood kits can be very straightforward or be a total PITA. Most can stand an upgrading in the detail parts since most have a few years (decades?) on them. Let me know what you might jump into and I'll help and see if I can get you supplied with the upgrade parts or at least point you to them.

Those LCL containers could be an interesting build with those arched tops. My 40 year old kit is finally under way

Lots of places that would fit on a layout.
Nice.

Thank you.....bloody glaze  All cut by hand, hateful. I’ve only built new kits where they are lasered to the size of the window opening. Test of patience for sure.

Thank you. So true along with all the others I’ve built and haven’t figured out where they will go. I’ve discovered I think I just like to build.

You may decide to sell some of them.
Rufus builds a lot of rolling stock and sells them.
Murph built scenes that he sold.
Both of them did/do fantastic work.

Excellent! Been there for years and it's a great place to be; very fulfilling and liberating!

Have you a picture of the other sides? I'm always looking to see what's on the other side of these kits as when they are marketed all too often only 1-2 sides are presented.

Thank you! Yes of course. Taking pictures exposes all my problems.... like my not so plumb window  Cardboard roof for effect

Nothing unusual about an out of plumb window on a building of this sort and use.
That might make it look even more realistic.

Thanks for the views! Like the mixed exterior siding styles - character added!

I routinely advise others to take photos of construction projects as the camera is a totally honest and unfeeling critic; it won't lie to you and it will point out every error.
