They were based on a prototype car that survived (unused for a number of years) into 2005 at least. The Lionel car was scaled down somewhat but is a reasonably faithful depiction.

This is what brass plating on the dome and bell parts can look like:

As I recall, the striped dome decorations are decals.

Oh yea. They mucked up the New Havens in the Mc Ginnis scheme just as badly. Flat black.

I was quite disappointed with the Legacy NP U33C. The real deal had yellow banding with a slight tint of gold and silver trucks. Lionel banded it solid gold and gave it black trucks. They must have confused the early canoe scheme you saw on geeps. It just looks all wrong. Fixing the trucks will be easy. The banding is something I'll have to live with.

I had thought about picking up that set a while back b/c my son loves the General & the LC is easy for him to use. I'm so glad I forgot about it. I saw the pics a few weeks ago of the actual product. VERY BAD job by Lionel. They need to be better about what they advertise & what is delivered. In this day of BTO, people are asked to buy these expensive engines sight unseen. I wound up buying an actual PW general for him.

another thing to note - I bought him the Western Union General set last year. It was brand new. Has been back to Lionel 3 times. Twice w/ bad boards. The latest time it was returned it seems to run very sluggish. Ugh.

Nice, Chris. I think the postwar General really looks the nicest. And I don't think it's been equaled throughout all the variations and flavors all these years.

There was a post on everybody's favorite magazine forum when these first shipped. The brass bands are there, but for whatever reason they got painted. One owner removed the paint from the bands and painted the yellow parts gold. More effort than should be needed for a new train, but not too bad.

It's not like they're bubonic rat shit, Roger. I love my toys the way some love their multi-million dollar art pieces.

I think the MPC era General is nice looking too - the one they did in 77/78.

That one had a black boiler. The postwar boilers were grey. If you can live with the oversized cab and wagontop boiler(I can't), modern Lionel has all kinds beautiful paint schemes on their Generals. I have the blue and black B&O set, and the Circus set.

I couldn't say no to this 1983 B&O set. It was the first General passenger set. (Previous sets were all mixed trains.) It was made in Mexico during Fundimension's brief flirtation with a maquiladora:

Even though the set came with just a DC power pack, the engine was fitted with an electronic e-unit so it could run right away on an AC layout. The cars are lighted and have working couplers.

I hot-rodded my engine with smoke (it now has a black stack), brass boiler bands, feedwater pipes, and proper drive and connecting rods.

Are you thinking of getting the set, and upgrading the engine, Roger?

Roger, this is my upgraded B&O engine. Sorry, for the crude photo.
