I certainly didn't mean to disparage the personal, or familial historic value of George's grandfather's boats.

P.S., George, I'm glad you understood what I was saying.

It's important to preserve the items as a matter of family history. It's just as important to preserve the safety of the future generations..

Having a toy that belonged to a great grandparent is cool but having one that I could actually play with is even better. If George can come up with a solution that satisfies both concerns then that's the best of both worlds.

Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

A coat of flat polyurethane should suffice to both seal and stabilize the surface to protect both the toy and the person(s) playing with it.

I agree. If a toy isn't fun to play with, what good is it? Is there a safe pool or lake close by your grandkids, George?

Sometimes playing with them is not the best of ideas.

Last toy I handled was one that my MiL handed to me wondering if it might be worth something; one that she and them my wife as a child had played with; beaten up and in bad shape..............but dropped it on eBay to see what would happen - $1500 later the 2 of them were in shock.

It wouldn't hurt to find out if there is significant monetary value in those boats, especially if the grandkids are lukewarm about them. My guess is, any kid today would much rather play with an RC boat, or RC anything else, for that matter.
