Passenger Car and Loco Projects
Passenger Car and Loco Projects
A good long distance friend has been building passenger car kits for the last couple of years. He gave me permission to post his photos here and since it's relativel slow and I haven't anything new to post I thought I would start a thread. He's adding the clerestory windows found on a Southern RPO. He's also built, but not yet added the metal bars that cover all the windows. I'll post them later.

That is great craftsmanship. He sure has his work cut out for himself.

Yeah, if there is anything Greg is, it is meticulous and not afraid of a challenge. Here are the window bars and test fit.
He loves details and used to super detail his brass models, but no longer works on brass.

This looks great! RPO's are tricky to get accurately, the cut-outs for the clerestory takes real skill to do cleanly too.
Thanks for posting, any more where this came from?

I have quite a few photos of steam locos Greg did, but I need to get more passenger car photos. He's mid 80's and says his soldering days are over but enjoys these kits.

Re: Passenger Car and Loco Projects
These are surely the definitive models! 3rd Rail came close with their plastic cars. There are many times when I wish I was satisfied with plastic - the detail beats metal every time. Remember that stunning IHB 0-8-0 for nine bucks?
I bought a bunch of the plastic in the 1970s and gave it to kids. Often wonder if it started them in O Scale -
Actually, I probably would have been better off with no trains. Think of the energy I could have put into radio astronomy or something (in reality it was radar systems engineering, which I put to good use).
Greg has built definitive models in plastic - you need to see his U-boat. He was a C-47 pilot in Vietnam. Mid-80's, indeed - where does the time go?

That question is asked frequently around my house.
Greg has been prolific for sure and the U-boat is a masterpiece....I think I have some photos. Besides the C-47 he was a career UPS pilot. But, not as "active" in general aviation as you Bob, but you know him well too.
He sent more photos of his OBS project I will post as soon as I can get them on Shutterfly.
I enjoy working in both brass and plastic, but I'm not as prolific as you are Greg are. Outdoor and home project are enjoyed the most and then indoor hobbies. Outdoor projects can be done in any frame of mine, whereas hobbies require more thought and I have to be in the right frame of mind.
Finally found some RC fuel tanks (Scale America) for the GP9 project, so once received I'll be cutting and splicing to build a larger 2400 gallon tank used under the turbocharged GP9's.
Re: Passenger Car and Loco Projects
Here is a 1950's NYC OBS Greg completed earlier this year. We are both love details and the more the better.....if they are correct. Greg didn't like the OBS deck railing so made his own along with other corrections and updates. He is a much better modeler than I am.

Some tedious painstaking effort there on assembling that end railing!

I’m fortunate enough to be within a couple hours of Greg and we visit a few times a year. I can assure, he’s work is even more impressive in person. His brass locomotives, all of which have been highly detailed by himself, are absolute perfection. And when I say detailed, it’s to the nth degree. It’s amazing what he accomplishes and how he works with such small pieces. Everything he builds is incredible and, in my opinion, he’s the best brass modeler in o scale, probably all of model railroading.
Much like his locomotives, the submarine he SCRATCH BUILT will blow your mind away. It’s 7 or 8 ft long and you can almost smell the diesel fuel, gun powder, sea mist-its that realistic. Scratch built gun turrets, all the rivets are hand punched (literally tens of thousands of them), and the conning tower is a model in itself. it’s all incredible.
Plus, he’s one of the best guys I know, a true gentleman.

I would like to see more if at all possible and if he is willing to share more.
