Previous post was rambling and not to the point. I remember sometime in the 90's (maybe later) seeing a magazine article about converting a normal soldered in place steam engine cab into a removable cab. I think it might have been in O Scale News, but not sure. If anyone remembers this article or has any insight into accomplishing this I would appreciate your comments.
Thanks,

Removable Cab Conversion
Re: Removable Cab Conversion
Butch, FWIW its your dingus but I'd sure as hell not do it. Let me be the one to most strongly council against doing such a thing.
Even if you might not be the victim, the next guy who would pick up the loco in the time-honoured fashion of one hand on the cylinders and the other under the cab eaves will have a nasty surprise coming. I found that out the hard way with a Westside KTM streamlined Hudson; they came with a removable cab. Every one that came across my workbench after that had the opposite operation, the cab getting soldered on properly.
Poke-able doors, windows, hatches, sand-covers, are collector masturbation opportunities and invite damage. A removable cab is well beyond that and invites destruction.

Re: Removable Cab Conversion
Thanks Sarge, you've gently awakened my common sense loose.....every now and again I find I need that. Sometimes I'm great at coming up with interesting concepts/ideas that are not remotely practical. And yes, all the sliding, opening, workable and scale sized whatsits makes handling O scale models a serious PITA. I'm awake now.
