Hello all
It's rare when the model train and it's prototype are being built at the same time but such was the case when Bob Smith of Central Locomotive Works (CLW) and Alco ( American Locomotive Co.) building the first Santa Fe PA's summer of 1946. Both engines were on display at the Waldorf Astoria NYC in September the Alco models were in a siding in the basement , CLW models were on display for the company brass dinners.
Santa Fe had Bob Smith build models to run on the Museum & Santa Fe RR layout at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago .
January 1947 CLW advertised the Alco 2000HP passenger diesels (PA's) in Model Railroader .
The CLW models were sand cast bronze by Adams & Son foundry of KS. Scaled to 17/64ths for O gauge . This model is unique and that the cast ends have been nickel-plated giving the engine a unique glow.
Passenger cars in video were made by Pomona of California from 1939 to 1941...this set uses Monel metal which simulates the same glow and shine of stainless used on the prototypes.
Pomona offered complete built up passenger sets including e-unit engines for a short period or you could buy the components in kit fashion.. all scaled to 17/64 th.
