The materials themselves are getting better as far as their material properties. I suspect the biggest reason for fragility, though, is inexperience in design rather than the material. Too thin a cross-section, no structure in both shear and tear in all three directions, that sort of thing. A computer type can make a program like SolidWorks sing perhaps, but doesn't have the fabrication skills to know how to avoid structural issues and stress concentrations, or even what they are.
