Charlie Miorrill's SP in Oregon

Postby R.K. Maroon » Sat Jul 17, 2021 8:01 pm

Fellow DFW club member Rodney Fraser and I stopped by Charlie Morrill's house in Benjamin, Texas on our way back from the O-Scale National in Denver last month. Charlie models the SP in Oregon, where he spent youth. He and his wife Reba moved from Houston to her home town of Benjamin maybe a dozen years ago. He dug a basement for a layout and then had a custom home fabricated off-site and delivered (It fit!). The basement is a good setup -- cool in the hot summers and warm in the cold winters (this is the plains of west Texas). Reba fed us pulled-pork sandwiches from the local BBQ joint and then Charlie asked if we wanted to go downstairs and run some trains. Rodney and I nearly tripped over each other getting to the staircase. We didn't get to stay long, but I managed to get enough video clips of the operation to piece something together for YouTube.

Some of you may recognize Charlie as the author of a recent article in O Scale Trains on scratch-building operating semaphore signals. There is a lot to admire in Charlie's layout, but the signal system is definitely one of the headliners.

Also, I learned today that you can create and share a playlist of videos on YouTube. I have done just that, highlighting the more popular videos I have posted since I started doing so ten years ago.

That’s pretty cool. Thanks for taking the time to film it.

Totally agree on the thank you. Charlie has been posting articles in O scale mags and forums for years, but I've never seen his layout. The working semaphore signals are exceptional for sure. And much appreciate the u-tube playlist too Jim.

Yeah, Charlie's a keeper.

I appreciate his early, and on going, efforts to use P:48 profile wheels but gauged to 5'.

Quite the craftsman, he is.

We have many of his signals on the layout but his operating wig wags are my favorite.

Nice video; smooth operation. Should I guess PSC Pacific?

Thank you for the complements on the layout. I'm a frequent reader here, but not much of a poster.
