I admit, I don't know NYC brass values and KEY is a quality model, but that sounds like way too much money even if it were NIB or mint. Very few brass locos, for any road, are worth than kind of money today. Good Luck to the seller.

That is the question. It's still all about the supply & demand, just not as much demand these days and more supply for common items.

Supply of any new ones is round about zero. So, limited to whatever of this specific model exist. Then factor in the insanity of demand and you might get some really crazy numbers.

This seller seems to have a problem with the truth, so I don't trust his judgement or his descriptions. Here is a description on another of his auctions. It's obviously been owner weathered, as they don't come like this from PSC. And, he has another one just like it for sale, but a different road and it does look new, so it would be hard to dismiss it as ignorance.

Never underestimate ignorance; far more probable an explanation that anything malicious. A lot of his stuff is also overpriced, but who knows......and it's 99% stuff that I have less than zero interest in selling to an audience that either has too much money available and/or little sense.

But looking again it appears that only 1 side and an end are weathered, and only partially on the other side.

Now, I have never seen anyone pay their "current price" on any model I’ve looked up. For example, I have 4 Glacier Park models which their "current price" ranges from 2400 to 2900. I paid less than 2000 for each one. Most of their production quantities were in the 20’s.

Lister's price seems even more inflated given that there is damage to address.

Engine, tender, box foam all in excellent condition.

When does visible damage and repair work counter "excellent condition"?

It's hardly an Iconic Water Level Route steam engine. Can you say HUDSON? Then Niagara and Mohawk. The damage didn't likely happen sitting in the box. Looks like a fishing expedition to me. 3K, no way.
