Design Issues?

Postby ScaleCraft » Fri Dec 25, 2020 11:50 pm

I don't know if this would even work without a lot of noise, or for how long.
Interesting piece, probably a lot of vintage provenance.
I would be willing to bet the brass bars underneath holding the sideframes together is a problem.
Of course, without hands-on, hard to be certain, but it appears the metal chains are dragging on the bars, actually lifted by the same bars. Had to have been NOISY in operation.
The chains look quite shiny where they have rubbed on the brass bars.
Almost like it needs rods between sideframes that go through the middle of the chains, but not sure how to hide their attachment to the sideframes....soldered to plates, 2-56 into the back of the sideframes?
Or just bridge strengthen across the top and down inside.

Nice outside third rail whiskers. Don't know how Carey missed that one.

brass bars underneath are pretty common and used to "adjust" tension on the drive chains, but usually round bar.....

If it were not outside 3rd rail, it would be interesting!

It looks like genuine Parmele & Sturgis New Haven. I may even have a spare lead truck - not sure.

Yes. LWS drives used them.....

Looking closely at the underside photos once again, and not having an original handy, I would guess that scab-soldered brass scraps bridging the sideframes and each other were NOT factory equipment.
I am certain someone with an original chassis at hand will correct me.
I also don't recall ever seeing a true doorstop with can motors before, but you never know.

If the shell was there, I'd try to put it back into service.

Most of my doorstops have can motors. The rest are dummies.

Then, like comments about "Not a true Adams and Sons" applies to Doorstops.
Even my SC engines that have had their field wound motors removed ALL use open-framed permags.
My A-N F units...GM and A-N switchers..GM steamers....all open framed.
You know, I realized none of my 3-rail stuff has a can motor. Can motors for the masses had not been developed when mine were built.
