90 degree radius curve....mmmmmmmm...yes, that would be decadent.
Am I wrong that one of the older importers (Precision-Oriental-Sunset et al) brought in their 9000 with a blind set too?
to compensate for the tighter modeler's radius issues? I want to say it was even an option for the buyer as in the model came with an extra wheel set

I didn't know PSC or Oriental imported a 9000 but one of the locals here had a Sunset 9000 version from this century and it did have a blind set, maybe 2. The layout he ran it on had a 60" loop and a 64" loop. I can't recall which of those loops the engine was on but it ran fine down to at least 64" curves.

Chris is absolutely correct, it was Sunset.

Since few of us, including me, have ever had the opportunity to see a KOH's loco, 9000 in this case, completely dismantled, I wanted to post these additional photos from Gary's. It truly is a remarkable model and considering the time period this loco was built/imported it makes it even more remarkable.

It is also remarkable that Gary has the talent, courage and patience to dismantled a complicated model to this level. A very gifted man.

That looks like a Delrin chain drop-down. About 25 years ago I was using them a lot. Almost half my sprockets cracked, and the big twin spool Challenger was noisy as all get-out. With Jay investing in metal sprockets, I assume a lot of the down-sides to this technique have been overcome?

I thought the same thing about the chain when I saw the following photo thinking to myself well that's going to stretch and be an issue in years to come.........................and then read Gary's comment on the chain. George was ahead of the crowd in many respects.

I enjoy seeing them apart, too. From my experience many, many, teeny, tiny screws.

I was just thumbing through some OSN back issues and it was mentioned in issue 152 Oct. 99 that 2 were blind. It also mentioned SS offered flanged drivers for those who wanted them.

Guessing the Loco looked a little odd on those sharp curves.

I had a 3 rail layout, and a Sunset UP 9000 running on 36" radius tracks which was ridiculous. I'm guessing the 2 rail version on 60" looked pretty good at that time.

I'm having difficulty even imagining that!

Your Koh’s UP Type is off the chart, absolute incredible model. I loved the pictures, especially the “break down” photos, not something you see every day. Never would’ve guessed a chain drive!

Gary’s talent is top notch as we already knew but I’m impressed again!

Sure appreciate guys like you sharing these high end models and knowledge of this hobby’s history.

A year ago OST magazine had an article on a SS UP Bald Face conversion. The builder did a great job, I’ve always wanted one of those. Have a candidate model but darn “real life” keeps getting in the way!
