Oil. Cleveland used to be a refining center in the early days of the petroleum industry. And Rockefeller was no saint.

Cleveland also had a mayor who set his hair on fire while using a cutting torch to cut a steel ribbon at a bridge opening. IIRC his wife turned down an invitation to the White House for dinner because it was on her bowling night.
The Cleveland Browns football team has been rebuilding since 1964. In 2017 they were 0-16.
The Cleveland Indians baseball team lost the 2016 World Series to the Chicago Cubs (the doormat of the National League) thus making them the team with the longest gap since their last World Series win (1948).
Cleveland was the fifth largest city in the U.S. in the early 50s with a population of over a million. It is now about 400,000 and falling. Less than half the households in the City of Cleveland include someone with a job.
I remember riding behind one of those black CUT electrics as a kid.

Unfortunately, most of the negative comments about Cleveland can be applied to many cities in the "rust belt" and in other parts of the country.
