Still an unpowered "dummy" lead engine.

More than I'd spend, but, hey, according to Trash Collectors of America:

"GMC made a limited run of 100 of the articulated 2-6-6-4 steam locomotive model kits. It had been in development starting in 1948 and took two years to complete. A picture of this model appeared on the cover of the All-Nation Hobby Shop's 'O' gauge Catalogue 8th edition. The 2-6-6-4 prototype was originally built in 1934 by the Lima Locomotive Works. It was intended for use in high speed freight service. Only 60 of them were actually ever built. In the GMC model just the rear 6 drivers were powered. The literature issued by GMC stated that the model was designed to run on a 36" radius track with just normal boiler overhang. Overall length with tender, coupler to coupler was 29½". Weight was 11¼ lbs. It featured a GMC free rolling worm drive, and was available with either a General 200 series AC/DC or DC only electric motor. The boiler was a super detailed Adams casting. The drivers were 70" Cadmium plated with steel rims. The tail beam of the frame was made of cast brass and was designed to float above the trailing truck assembly. Cost complete with tender was listed as $125. It was promoted in the 'O-Gager' magazine as "the finest locomotive ever put on the market"."

Wow! I saw it, and figured it would top $150, since there seems to be a feeding frenzy going on with old stuff. Did you see the $5000 cast lead F-3s that had semi nice paint?

There may have been 100 complete kits, but there sure seems to be a lot of boilers out there. You can use them as hammers.

The prototype? No way - closest you will come is P&LE or that West Virginia/Southern monstrosity, and even that is just close.

Their Mountain apparently has no prototype, either, but it makes a much more pleasing model. I have three, and a fourth sitting on USH drivers awaiting details.

Model looks kinda sorta like a P&WV J-1 sans Belpaire. Slap a Belpaire on the model and call it good!

I thought P&WV too, those were awfully cool looking brutes. I have to admit I'm kind of fascinated with these AN mallets even without a real prototype.

P&WV had some really natty looking FM H20-44's too, Jim and I discussed finishing one of those old Walther's (Baldwin) versions accordingly too, but I digress

That's the one. Belpaire and only one giant sand dome. I too would build one, but the parts would have to be free. And don't even think it can pull itself with three geared axles. It can't.

But long before that I would build an N&W class A in 17/64.

I'd love to have one to turn into a caricature of the P&WV loco. I do have more projects than lifetime left, so, no.
The shot of the underside shows one (1) geared axle; can't tell what is going on with the lead engine. Assuming that the lead engine can also be geared, why shouldn't this loco be a good puller?
Oh, well, it probably won't run on 36"r curves anyhow, unlike my Lionel EM-1...

That's how they came...rear engine only powered. Saw one once someone hd cobbled up both engines.
They pulled really, really poorly with only rear engine powered.

I had a chance to pick one up 30+ years ago, was counseled not to due to lack of prototype and lousy pulling.
