I wanted the boiler for a fantasy project 2-6-2 I want to build on a wrecked chassis and rear engine of a Sunset Models Samson, a very small 2-6-6-2.

I was hoping to grab it for 50-75 bucks.................

Yes. You will be extremely lucky to get even most of the pieces in a basket for $100. This one was a bargain under $300.

Had a guy come by the other day, looking to buy my 1965 convertible Mustang. He was thinking two grand.

I didn't look closely, since I don't need one - but you are correct - looks like a Thomas tender. Can't imagine the tender would be much more than $50 of the total value.

I just thought of something........ Do any of you have a Cab/boiler laying around that might suit my purpose. Needs to be about the size of a normal 0-6-0 or smallish 0-8-0 with a fat boiler. Looking to build something like this.......

Well, yes. It is a 1 1/2" dia. brass tube. If you need it slightly tapered, you slit the belly and insert a wedge. Smokebox is another piece of tube with a riveted and soldered overlay. The difficult part is all that other stuff - cab, running boards, piping, domes . . .

The other alternative is to cut 3 1/2 " off the original Samson boiler, move the smokestack, bell and light and find a boiler front to fit. That is a lot of work for a whimsical project as I'm trying to build a layout with scenery and structures etc etc**. Only so many hours in a day so anything to save time............

Sometimes the replies and advice given here reminds me of the cartoon in an old Model Railroader magazine. It was something to the effect of how to make a Big Boy out of a Varney Docksider. Similar to the old Kemtron instructions......here's a list of parts and here's a photo of the completed model and nothing in between.

How right you are, Jay!!

When I look at my layout I wonder why it is not further along than it is. Then I remember I do everything myself.
Build the bench-work, hand lay the track, wire the track/switches-powered frogs, build the structures, some heavily modified kits*, some scratch built, re-motor, paint, weather locomotives as well as install DCC. The turntable is a Keith Wiseman kit, modified and powered by an auto electric window motor.............etc etc.

Hey, it's all fun but slow.........

My offer was in good faith. I would have needed a worthwhile trade, but this size boiler is simply trivial. There was a time when Lorenzen offered surplus Lobaugh boilers, but no more.

As for the Sampson boiler, your proposal would be ok if you cut very carefully with a Dremel disc. The boiler would quickly fail with even a very fine tooth hacksaw. Either of your alternatives will be costly to start.

Stevenson has domes and stacks. PSC still offers the Kemtron cab.

I wonder if one of the Bachman 0n30 boilers would work for you. The Ten wheeler they make is pretty big for a narrow gauge engine. Might work for a small prairie logger. Those are not brass though.
