I have an embarrassing number of these things. Most of you have seen them all, but I am avoiding lesson plans. Here is the Raymus version before soldering:



The improvements this week are not really noticeable, but I shall get photos. Gone are the pins holding parts in place, and the windshield is carved to approximate EMD style.

Let me show you how most of these things begin life - Yuk!

And my best attempt to date - an F-3 nose, E-7 roof, and sheet sides with soldered bats:

Doorstop E7s'? As the notably unqualified junior senator from a very-large-and-historically-frozen-but-melting-evermore-by-the-minute state once said, "You betcha!".

Here is my first doorstop E7, an AB set attributed to Arthur Hambrick of Atlanta:





The A-unit appeared in my series on Adams and Son in OST last year. It looks like classic Adams & Son, but this particular model does not use the A&S E7 casting set. The nose is from an FT and the roof is from an E6. The B-unit looks like the roof is an A&S roof. Note the difference in the roof cooling grids between the A and the B. The A grids are CLW add-ons, while the B grid is cast in. Both units have brass sides with soldered baton strips. Going by at speed these look great but sitting still one wonders why it is so hard to get the batons straight. I haven't tried and I am not pointing fingers -- in fact the thought of the effort makes me agree with Bob that there must be a better way, or perhaps it's simply better to just leave them off.

By the way, Bob's posting of the GN E7 is timely for me. I have an Empire Builder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6UArvAZEOk) and have been thinking about the best way to gin up a set of F-units to pull it outside of the Cascade Tunnel division, as I tend to think of an ABBA set of Fs with thinking of the EB. However, my brother informs me that my EB is the 1947 train and that this was commonly pulled with a pair of E7s. That is welcome news to me -- it's always good to have options. Tough paint scheme either way. Bob, are the stripes on yours painted or decaled?

Jim - stripes were done with "Pilot" pens - fine line, available at stationery stores. First, white. Then, when dry, yellow. All colors were baked-on Scale Coat. Before applying a pen, give the paint two weeks, baked or not.

Decals were by Jim Wilhite, and theoretically still available from La Belle.

Nice door stops !
The period just before and after the war is a fascinating one for diesels ... the market had come up with some darn good looking steamers and it was back to school when they turned their attention on diesels.
Each manufacturer seemed to interpret what a diesel should look like with a unique ( in some cases you can substitute odd here) flare of their own.
No two "period " diesels seem to be the same ... the masses must have clung on to steamers as long as possible... till Atwater /GMC brought a reasonably priced , easy to build, and a good looking product out.

Adams castings built (attributed to) Corbin, ? Pomona ?, Baldwin circa 1948- as shown in Walthers catalog , ? Scratch built .. no castings Except truck side frames

All fun stuff even if the rivet count is off a bit

I count seven E-7 Doorstops around here. I am still struggling with the bats on two - apparently the skinnier the better. And it may well be that embossed paper looks better than soldered rivet strips. Here is a "before" picture with paper strips:

I actually got two - these last two both came in as T & P, with E-6 sides and paper bats.

I am the only participant this evening - maybe I will bump this thread for the new guy. I did solder the Raymus E-7; cannot believe I did not get a shot.

Note, that E7's classic T&P paint job , a classic scheme, but damn the yellowing on the white, yikes.
Microscale made the T&P E unit set, beautiful looking set too.

Carrie keeps floating that cool group shot of E Doorstops here, do we have a good photo set of that CB&Q E-5 on the far left somewhere out here?
I really want to see that one "up close" most intriguing.

The E5 has Adam & Son castings .... was bought from one of the Jim Seacrest auctions earlier this year ... it is believed built by Bernie Corbin ...and headed a set of 17/64ths Exacta cars... sold at the following auction .

The engine does run ... I was able to buy 3 of the matching Exacta cars.... soon you'll see a link to watch them in motion .... still working on the shelf layout

Thanks Carrie I definitely missed that part of the string over on OGR, your E5 is a fascinating piece, congrats on snagging it off the Seacrest liquidation, it's a beauty. Have you (or anyone else here like maybe Steve?) ever seen a Pomona Valley version
of one of these? they catalogued them in 1940 along with these intriguing DZ shovel nose units (which I know I've posted and asked about before)
I keep asking periodically asking this in the hopes that someone has one or has seen one. My opinion they're one of the "black swans" or "holy grails" of "doorstop-dom."



Based on their fabulous catalog, and the few products I've seen of theirs , Pomona Valley was unto itself compared to the rest of the industry back then in my opinion (except maybe for Alexander, he was a visionary too)

Hello Pomona admirers ...

The stream-liner is unique ... one was running in NYC in 1940 ....check out the back staging area for the trains ..... for full Pomona stream-liner ...and what that streamlined steamer ? the C&NW ?.... wow two very neat sets ...


Years later 1953 one of the Pomona streamlined engines was still working a layout ..on the cover of Toy Trains .....

so they are out there some where....just have to keep beating the bushes

Here are pictures of my Pomona Valley E5 A and B. They are very nicely done, and note that they are all sheet brass. These are the only Pomona Valley diesels I have seen.
