The Erie-Built

Postby bob turner » Fri Jul 07, 2017 9:49 pm

Thanks to Jay, Bill Serratelli at Atlas, and a yet to be disclosed sand-casting artist, my doorstop F-M locomotive is beginning to take shape. I shall slowly be showing you photos as I proceed.

One thought is to make it Milwaukee, with that art deco piece of stainless. That decision is way down the track.

You're going to have to get yourself a Wenonah.

Bob,

I'm happy to hear you like the casting.

How do you propose making the roof and sides? I know you're talking about doing sand castings but you still need masters.

Because of the size limitations with the investment canisters full length sides aren't possible. Could you make two piece sides out of styrene and do direct burnouts (like we did with the nose)?

That is a possibility. Sides are a foot long. First, they go to the sand caster, to capture that "doorstoppy" look. I am anticipating success - at least as good as the CLW/Adams castings. At that point, the sides will still exist.

It may be partly my fault - photos are no longer accepted unless via Photobucket, and I officially hate Photobucket. I have the as-cast nose photos, and some shots of the minimally cleaned-up nose. It is almost perfect, and way beyond doorstoppedness.

As soon as our photo receptors get fixed, I will start a photo essay.

Bob,

You can always email me the photos and I'll place them in my Photobucket. After that I can post here.

Because you are the rightful owner I didn't think it was appropriate to post anything.

Just a question...your Photobucket still works, or did you pay the $400 ransom?

Dave,

I don't understand the $400 comment. I pay an annual fee but it's not much.

Starting on or about 20JUN of this year, they changed the Terms of Use without notice and started a roll out of blocking all third party hosting (like, posting your photos here) that has created a HUGE uproar. Killed Amazon, ebay, google photos that were posted.
Forums everywhere are dead to photos. Maybe it either hasn't reached you yet or that have changed their mind based upon the outcry and folks pulling their photos, going elsewhere, and cancelling their Photobucket account.

This is one of thousands of google hits, even shows the picture they now put in place:

https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photobucket-now-charges-399-for-third-party-hosted-images/

Some bloggers claim to have been fully locked out of Photobucket and have lost all photos.

http://www.csoonline.com/article/3205765/internet/photobucket-replaced-millions-of-images-with-ransom-demand.html

Most comments I have read if people are being proactive and removing and putting all their photos elsewhere in case this is the end of Photobucket.

Reading up, their ad revenue has dropped off really significantly (they claim due to ad blockers), so to nail folks with this much with no warning (how many folks go to the home page of their current programs and services and read up on TOU or TOS changes regularly?) indicates to some the financial ability of Photobucket to continue may be irreparably compromised.

Dave,

I have no idea. I'm not paying any crazy fees. I think it's about $20 year and it still works here. I posted a few photos of the CLW Blomberg truck sideframes and the photos are from my photobucket account.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17043

I may be wrong but I think users can look through my entire photobucket album (or whatever they call it).

Jay:

As of the moment when I'm writing this, Photobucket is indeed halting third-party hosting for anything below the $399 annual level accounts. They have posted that in their updated (belatedly) terms of service on their site. You probably fall unto the category of those whose accounts will continue to be honoured with third party hosting privilege until Dec 2018, when those accounts also will be closed to third party hosting unless uprated to the $399 annual fee level.

All this nonsense appears to perhaps still be in implementation: my account wasn't blocked from third party use immediately like several others here, for example, and I don't really know how this will shake out for them now that it has exploded in their face as it has.

Anyway, I'm chiming in here as I do know you are in the game commercially, so I'd be so bold as to suggest you ensure all your business images are also backed up elsewhere and you have a place to migrate them. It would appear, if they keep operating as they plan, you will need to be ready to act as you see fit come December 2018 when the $20 accounts end, or anytime sooner if the pundits are right and they have committed corporate suicide by this move and its implimentation.

BTW, you'll note my avatar here now shows what some have been calling their "ransom note". My "Commander McBragg" image is the only one I left (on purpose) in my account when I moved mine off Photobucket this week. Took 'em til Friday to kill my third party hosting.

Sarge,

Thanks for the in-tell. Reading the guidelines is kind of like explaining the rules in a knife fight. Never been done though it might not be a bad idea from time to time.

Photobucket is my way of posting non business related, I think, photos of various forums. If they do try to raise the rates any higher I will bail. Luckily all my photos are still on my computer.....somewhere.

Guess I'll just have to wait and see what develops. I suppose we'll come up with work-a rounds.

The people who were in good standing with their paid accounts are good through December 2018. After that, migrate or pay up.

It's all in the Terms of Service that took effect on June 1, 2017.

Great example of what happens when huge numbers of people don't read that email that has the changes in the Terms of Service.

I suppose but I simply don't care to read all the crap that comes across my screen. I have more important things to do. Having said that, I do watch where the money goes. They raise the rates I go away. Doesn't take much time.

Turns out that this time that crap was important.....and few read it. If you had had a free account....

Where will you go?
