Auction Again but...

Postby RDSRR » Wed May 03, 2017 8:43 pm

So I am looking over the next Seacrest auction and looking at lot number 2748 and 2750. I am no expert but I wonder if these were built by Bernard Corbin. I know Jim had some of his engines but the pictures are not that good. Any thoughts?

Top - probably Corbin. Bottom - probably modified Hines. I had a Corbin Mike go through here; I will check the cab number.

Jim also had a Gerry White CBQ 2-10-4. Beautiful model, but extremely heavy and no boiler taper.

Dan -
The engine in the top photo, 5346, is definitely a Corbin engine. It is pictured on page 16 of the Burlington Bulletin No. 36, published by the Burlington Route Historical Society. They did a very nice article on Bernie in that issue.
I don't know about the other one.

Thank you both for the information. I'll keep an eye on the top one when I go down there. I really don't need another engine but I thought maybe a piece of O scale history. And my so and his wife who are now building their own home layout are big Burlington fans (sadly in HO :? ) and have always pestered me to have at least one Burlington engine.

Dan

If I was a CB&Q buff, there was an article in the late OSN titled "Bob _____ (can't recall the last name) and the Quarter Q Locos" or a reasonable facsimile of that. They were really well done. Not sure of their status these days, but they would be a prize.

PS: Think the gents last name is Hall.

Yes. Bob Hall was a really good builder. There are/were some really good builders in the Seattle area.

The Mikado in the first post is not one I have seen, but I can show you shots of Corbin's work. As with most of us, some work is really good, and other work may be average at best. When my estate becomes available, watch out for unfinished/unpowered models. At some point I became convinced I could make anything run smoothly, so I quit trying in favor of getting good looking display models. Most will have gears in the boiler.

R.K. Hall (Bob Hall) was a good friend and excellent builder.
What surprises me is the Quarter Q...which is Dick Garberson't railroad...and RK built a whole pile of Q engines for him.

The 5346 Corbin engine went for $950.

Now if some one could explain this:

I know it was a 9 car lot but $875 plus almost 30%???

I got two nice lots of undec Atlas cars for my own road at about $26 a hit for 19 cars with the 10% included.

Reminiscent of the old PE Red Cars stacked on Terminal Island.

Ok, I'll try.... I assume your picture was of Lot 2441: 9 kit built O scale Union Pacific streamlined passenger cars

The auction description said the lot included "five Railway Express Agency/ Baggage cars including a horse / baggage car, two chair cars with full interiors, heavyweight baggage , and cafe lounge observation". I'm not a UP guy, but I assume that the only other way to get models of those prototypes would be to built it yourself and/or buy brass. The buyer paid $125 a car, which is a lot less than brass.... plus the pictures attached to the online auction made the lot look a lot nicer than your picture, Dan! :D

I think I bid on one of the lots you won. The in-person bidders seemed to win most of the lots that went for reasonable prices, which makes sense -- they could bid more than the online bidders since they weren't going to be paying shipping if they won.

Most auction houses charge less of a buyer's premium to in house bidders. Usually 3% less and another 2% less if you pay cash or check.
