DALMAN TRUCKS???

Postby Seaboard Air Line Fan » Tue Feb 28, 2017 4:09 pm

Keil Line and AUEL made these in the past, but I have not seen any newer, better versions. There was a guy in Australia that was attempting to make some using a 3D printer, but he may have dropped off the earth as I have heard nothing else about it.

Here's what they look like:

Seaboard used them on these unique boxcars:

I built a model a few years back and used a set of Keil Line trucks, but the detail needs to be severely upgraded:

I tried to convince Norm at ProtoCraft to make them but he said not at this time

I need to check Shapeways  maybe the Aussie has them on there!

Check with Billy Davis. He imports a serious variety of freight trucks. I think I could spare a set of Lobaugh side frames.

Robert,
It's a kit-bashed Atlas O Trainman 40’ boxcar (item 0506-1, ACL #24183). I wrote an article about it that was in the online magazine "Lines South", 4th qtr 2004. I had to do a LOT of hacking on the Atlas car to make this thing.

Here's a photo of an original Atlas car and the converted car:

Seaboard had some unusual cars and when I saw it I had to have one.

They were used mainly for long lumber loads and rolls of paper. With a 20' wide opening on opposite sides it must have been very easy to maneuver the loads. The fishbelly sides/underframe must have kept it rigid.

I originally had 2-rail wheels on it so I know I can swap when necessary!

It's an eye catcher Bob...you did a beautiful job. It's going to be even more appealing on your new 2 rail track... :D

Thanks Robert!

The hardest part was trying to figure out how the doors overlapped. In the end I made a dual-channel out of square brass tubing, cutting one side out of each tube to form a 3-sided channel and soldered them together. They had to be wide enough so the doors would slide in them, but thin enough so the gap between the doors was almost non-existent.

It worked well, but I would have liked to have seen some closeups of the real deal.

Here's a photo of the doors open:

So interesting...you wanted this one a lot I think, and chased down a workable way to manage some of the oddities built into the prototype... quite effectively I'd say.

Here's the first step in the conversion:

As we all know...the first cut is the hardest thing to do in the process. Once that first cut is made the rest is all downhill

Definitely represents a dive into the deep end of the pool...the end results you achieved were clearly worth it Bob.

Like Dave said, try Bill Davis "American "O" Scale Services", brassmonger on Ebay.

Maybe also Rich Yoder, RY Models. He has done several types of trucks.

Thanks Rich!

I just emailed Mr. Davis about the trucks. He has the Dalman 1-level trucks :( but I need the 2-level :( :(

Will report back soon.

I am not aware that the 2-level Dahlman have ever been done. Make a single sideframe and talk to someone that does resin casting,

For what it's worth, and this may not be a viable alternative, Pacific Limited imported two
versions of Southern Pacific gondolas in the late 1980's that differed only in the version of
the truck that was offered as under the model. Their PL-1650 represented SP Class G-50-9
gondolas with Bettendorf "T" Section trucks (and was the version that I had more interest
in as it was used under my favorite RR's version of that gon), while the PL-2000 represented
SP Class G-50-12 gondolas with what PL called an ARA 4-Spring Dalman truck, and which
may be the one that you are seeking. The engineering diagram at the top of this thread shows
7 springs in each sideframe, but it could be construed to be 4 from the way they are staggered.

Both versions of these cars show up periodically on eBay (or at shows). The usual caveat about
checking the trucks in the box, as sometimes the box may say one model, the contents may be
the other...or the trucks may be absent, or may be the AAR cast U-channel truck (Hey! Some of
the real cars were retrucked with those on the SP in the 40's and 50's, so why not the model??).
I have both versions of the PL model, but I would have to go to the storage facility to retrieve
the G-50-12 version to check the springs for the 2 different levels.

If you find a model with the correct trucks, you can demount them for use on your SAL boxcar.
And since you are going to throw the carcass of the gondola out anyway, heave it in my direction!
I have a few extra "T" Sections that I could retruck it with.
Take care,
Wolfgang
