What’s on your Workbench?
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Finished! Interior is painted buff, the floor painted red, glazing installed, reassembled and a photo. It represents a western region cabin that is 2 years old. A bit of weathering will be applied at some point. Soon the next project, a Pacific Limited PRR X23b.

Re: What’s on your Workbench?
I'll give it an 11 out of 10. On the top of my list of cabin cars. Gotta be the portholes and train phone antenna!

I don't have a favorite PRR Cabin, although I have more N5c's in my collection than any class.
Here's a sampling. I scratch built the 1/29th from styrene, the Grabowski O Scale, a Railclassics HO and a Bowser N Scale. I'm also adding the 1:1 scale N5c 477974. Here it is in 1952 and again a few years back undergoing restoration. A few of us restored it, several of us painted it and I lettered it. Still not finished although more has been done since this last photo shown.
and
. The 477974 saw service in Northern Pa. in the Williamsport, Sodus Point area, thus no train phone.

Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Very nice, and a good spread of scales (including 12”=1’) is always fun.
Well done!

Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Here’s the fourth LV diesel that you saw in bits earlier. Again, a day with backscene painting going on in the capable hands of my good mate, whilst I finished this guy up.

This one goes with the mid-70s LV scenario, finishing out the Valley roster for both decades. Don’t know what is next in the queue but hope to have backscenes done by midweek, then we restock the railroad and see what might need a repair from this exercise.

Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Pennsy Freak here. I like the N6a and N6b.
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
The N5C would be my favorite, but the more variations the merrier, and there were some pretty neat MOW stuff like the N23 and some yellow painted versions. There used to be 2 or 3 N5C's sitting outside the PRR museum at Strasburg. They looked like they were awaiting restoration. That was several years back.
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
If I was to pick the signature PRR cabin to me (admittedly an outsider), it’d be the N5c hands down. Now, Pennsy’s best was the N8. That was a nice riding car with that long wheelbase, as nice as the NYC baywindow cars.
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Any idea where i can find side grabs for a cabin car? i also need the ones placed alongside the doors. I tried making them out of florist wire, with no luck. I looked online and can not find any. I may end up using some from an rs3
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Yeah, that N5c is a pretty outstanding design with all the roof details. Being a detail nut I can really appreciate your model and that car just screams "look at me, I'm an outstanding model". Nice job PRRK4. With you and Sarge the words "Productive or Prolific" come to mind, as you guys don't let any moss grow under your feet.
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Robert, I think the use of florist wire is hit or miss trying to get them curved right. Here's an old O scale Quality Craft N6b I built years ago. I tossed out that green coated steel wire in favor of brass rod from K&S. Easier to form. The middle leg is added (soldered) after the main grab is installed.

Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Concur on the brass wire. Its a bit harder and springier so takes an even radius more readily. You can work your florist wire nicely, but stretched over a form is the way to go with that stuff.

Robert,
For store bought I would check the P&D Hobby Shop website. They have an excellent parts inventory, and are great to deal with!

Re: What’s on your Workbench?
No way that I could afford one of those brass N5cs so I will have to settle for my two K-Line ones; one with and one without the Trainphone antenna. But my all time favorite caboose is the B&O I12 "wagontop". Lionel offered a very good rendition so I got one and am going to two-rail it soon.
Re: What’s on your Workbench?
Agreed! Another true classic. I needed a single caboose for the B&O interchanging LV in the mid ‘70s scenario, so guess what I zero’d in on?

It’s a Sunset car scored for pretty easy money really. My only contribution to its appearance is a bit of weathering. The photo is staged using a Geep from a different scenario (Reading interchanging WM) but oh why not. Grin!
