The boiler is for an AYSF 1200 class pacific. I do not think this class has been made in O scale before. Bob T got the boiler taper just right. Not an easy job, upward taper on the boiler and downward taper on the firebox. My job will be to finish it. Some had feed water heaters. We’ll see. Bob T did the hard work.

By the way, Weaver made the Valley Flyer which can be unshrouded somewhat easily making a very nice 1337 class Pacific.

I also like the ATSF turtle back tenders salvaged from the 2-10-10-2. Sometimes Lionel parts has them. Bob T gave me the idea of making one from wood. That will be a retirement project.

That boiler and bands are outstanding. Such a clean soldering job.......wow!

News! The Lobaugh Pacific, long known as not the most accurate model ever, really does ride high in front! I have maybe six of them in finished form, and every single one of them has a huge gap between the pilot wheels and the frame extension. Fortunately, I know how to fix that, and will do the first one this evening, after I remove SW's boiler for shipping.

I do know how to add arrows to illustrate the problem - but it is now so obvious. Just look above the front pilot wheel, right behind the pilot:

Might ride high, but it looks great! Your paint really shows off the details.

Insert photo into Powerpoint; use arrow tools in Powerpoint; save slide as jpg.

Yes the weathering looks great. Bob, what is your technique for weathering?

In this case, Floquil Grimy Black, plus a lot of grey, orange, and brown chalk, powdered and dusted on, and then Dullcote. The Dullkote takes the intensity out of the chalk in a hurry, so over-doing the chalk is difficult to do.

I prefer Scale Coat gloss black to start, because the decals can disappear more easily.

Alas, with the exception of one still good bottle (thanks Jay) I am out of Scale Coat.

I sold all of my Scale Coat off not thinking I'd ever really use it - rarely ever did. Still have 1-3 Scale Coat rattle cans on the one shelf.

Floquil Grimy Black and other blacks, I have a few bottles of still.

Even if Scale Coat does ever come back into production, I suspect it will differ from the prior incarnation....

I think its your chalks that really brought it to life. I've used some PAN Pastels in the past which are as fine as women's cake make-up. They also have an adhesive added in that makes them stick better than just powdered chalks...........but they all need an overcoat or they will wear away with handling.

I tested it on this IM UP boxcar about 6 years ago and I was very happy with the results.....I just haven't done any other since.

Link to Dick Blick where I got them but they can be bought many places.

Bob, Thank you. I thought it was chalk.

I liked Scale Coat, but as all know, hard to find now, presumably OOP. I have gotten decent results with Taniya Gloss black and gloss black Dupli-Color. The latter purchased at the auto parts store. Both are lacquers.

I have only heard good things about pan pastels. Thank you for sharing an example.

I did it backwards as I need to add some oils or acrylic paints for the heavily weathered and rusted and areas, but I found out I like PAN Pastels. Lee told me he uses 6 or 7 different materials in his weathering process. The biggest thing I learned seeing small portions of his procedure is patience. You can't rush weathering as you add a little at a time..........unfortunately, patience is not one of my stronger qualities.

Here is my very first attempt at weathering. Bought the kit in 1955 - it was a silver and orange "Feather" car. It resides on 1 1/8" gauge track, and still runs weekly.

Bob,
I surmise that SP car is S scale? Looks pretty good. I see no evidence of the feather.

I never answered SW - the box car is Athearn O Scale - Trucks are Athearn die cast, but with machined steel bolsters. High School machining project - used a giant mill.

Back to the ATSF Steam - I brought the Mountain home a couple days ago, machined some brass to widen the running boards, and added some driver springs. It is not much changed from its preceding photo above, but still worth inserting. Shutterfly still loves me, since I bought an expanded copy of my SP Steam book.

Next steps for this heavy doorstop - an ashpan, some marker lights, some cooling coils and train lines under the running board, and better paint. But it serves its purpose of amusing me. I had to machine the brass for the running boards, because although I can purchase 3/32 square stock, it is really, really expensive, and the shipping doubled it.

Now that I look at it - the ashpan will go in tonight!
