Modern crap holds no great appeal for me - far more fun and freedom just building whatever I want. But these cars are hardly modern by many standards; tank car is the only one that holds any passing appeal for me anyway...

You can piss and moan about it until the cows come home, but it does appeal to a large segment of the hobby. You might take some solace that one of these days the modern crowd will displace the steam diesel buffs, but it's still not going to be anything you care about. Put some posts up about the stuff YOU like. Maybe you'll get some feedback. There are a pile of folks registered on this board, maybe someone is hiding out there! I'd much rather hear about what you like, than sour grapes. Maybe you can teach us heathens something!

This century....friend found four wood boxes (still have two) that held 4-6 SC freight cars in each. Destined for da dump. Little cleanup, still have all the cars.

Worth what they sold for, right?

Or the pile of Woodyshit, find a SC tank body.....and I had the frame and trucks. Zero cost outlay until I go looking for tank car decals.

Most of the dumpsters I've seen have NO price requirements! It is also a virtual certainty that it will ALL end up in the dumpster sooner of later. Saving stuff for posterity is an illusion.

My .02 while it's true nothing in any of our piles of stuff will likely escape the soil, baring some alien archeologist's find in the dig, there's really nothing to prove about your own preferences about what's worthwhile to model, build, collect or whatever. Caving into some other person's aspersions is pretty self-negating anyway, candidly I think I really (slowly) got that over this only in the past twenty years, sad to confess.
Anyone should be able take up whatever modeling subject and method interests them regardless of what other's think.
You gotta do what you want to do.

BTW we have three brass semi-finished two bay open hopper car-bodies from the donation pile looking for a loving home......seriously.

Nice offer! I am sated. I keep finding freight cars of true value around here - yesterday I was looking at a dusty old tank whilst cleaning out a part of the hangar - Lionel 715! Somebody had nipped the couplers off the trucks, but otherwise stock, although the authentic decals are new.

Yes - several ways of enjoying trains. One way is to never open the box - remember that $32,000 Lionel 700E? The minute one opens the box it descends to four grand or zero, depending on zinc pest. Another way is complicated switching moves - I'd rather kill myself. But others totally enjoy it.

I should post some freight cars here someday - Shuttlesworth seems not to mind my now burgeoning collection. We'll see . . .

Here is my original 715 bought from Becker on 11th St in Philly sixty years ago for $15. This one is stock except for plastic axles to allow 2-rail operation. Probably drops its value by $200, but as we say, probably will hit the dumpster before two more decades slip by:

I have a string of those in postwar. Glass beaded, painted black, sequential NP numbering, and another to do.
Other than trucks, basically the same car.
Used to pick them up rusted but complete at train shows for five bucks. Worth the effort for that price.

Got a spare set of 700 series trucks handy?

Dave, I see a couple things in your pic I like a lot: The Loco with the slope back tender, and those trees painted on your backdrop. I find the way they are superimposed over the mountains very pleasing to the eye.

Those trees are painted on masonite, enough to cover about half the basement. The slopeback...well,never could afford (or was given) a Lionel B-6, so I took a 675, whacked the Belpaire and cab off, spliced a 1615 cab in, chopped the pilot back, and found the tender at St Vincent for a buck and a half.
