This week will be the last of the K4s. I will hit you in subsequent weeks with my Decapod, which does feature a Scale Craft boiler, but other than that it is off to H10s, G5s, E6s, and the occasional USH model. Then, presumably around November, we will start the electrics. I am still dreaming of a scratchbuilt P5a, like the ones in Carey's great video (only quieter).

Image

This one is a conglomeration - USH tender (off the track in honor of Dave); Ed Alexander main frame, which was initially soldered incorrectly, then one side sanded down by some scoundrel in the past. Lobaugh drivers with incorrect counterweights. Scale Craft boiler which was, in the past, used by some irate wife to beat either her train-loving spouse to near death, or to hammer fenceposts into hard ground (I had to make a steel mandrel and hammer a lot more to get it back to conical shape). And, I think, good piping and minor detailing.

Maybe I shall paint it before I depart?

Here is the last one - another relatively stock example:

Image

Correct counterweights, but not the original drivers. Those went to a guy in Florida whose name escapes me - I think his son has his relatively large and well cared-for collection. I do have correct cast iron drivers, but am too lazy to re-tire and fit them at the moment.

Paint is exactly as I received it - very old, with cracks reminiscent of those old mud dry lakes one can see in the desert a few days after a good thunderstorm. I am preserving it as-is.

All of these have giant axle gears; all run quite well. The best ones are the ones with gear on the main driver, but most of mine for some reason are the older ones with the giant housing on the rear axle.

I envy you guys - all out barbequeing, sailing, or otherwise taking a summer break from this weird hobby. More next week, unless somebody starts an interesting thread for me to tag onto.

Not hardly.....unless you consider mowing for hours, clearing brush, cutting trees out of fence rows, and dragging logs....and there was nice doe out by the house today eating one of my azaleas.

More next week, unless somebody starts an interesting thread for me to tag onto.

I should have a caboose or 2 completed soon,

Instead of H10's maybe do you have any earlier 2-8-0's like an H6 (H6s, H6sb, narrow or wide boiler variants), or an H3, or even an H1,

In the meantime, here's an PRR F3c (CVRR had 5 of them #'s 70-74):

Time for another photo. For those of you so inclined, take a look at SW's videos. If Pentrex can clean them up I might have to have the steam one.
I think the only PRR I still need, other than maybe a Tuscan Pullman, is the big J1 and the boxcab P5.

I don't have very many smaller PRR steam - I have a stack of B6 models, including one Lionel, but no Moguls or small Consolidations, and no 0-4-0s. Let me see if I can find the Lionel for this week:

Yeah, here it is. I got it from Senor Contreras in Mexicali maybe 40 years ago. Mr. Contreras had his own tortilla business, and gave us a tour of his shop. He showed us a scratchbuilt Challenger that was really well done - they just doubled the size of a Bowser Challenger and made the whole thing out of brass.

I 2- railed it, straightened the cab, put 717 trucks under the tender, and pressed on. I had to make a special jig to get the drivers concentric, and did that on a vertical mill. And I painted it - I believe in slightly more green than most - the real railroad is said to have whispered "green" over the 55 gal drum of gloss black. Scalecoat did an excellent job of that . . .

I have 2 as the CVRR had 2.

... and no 0-4-0s.

I have 1 PRR model but the CVRR had none, so.......hmmmm...
I also have a Reading camelback 0-4-0 that is the only steam loco that can enter the one siding.....so it proves its usefulness there.

I too have the Reading Camelback. Be aware that the drivers will someday need Loctite to stay on the axles in quarter.

PRR used to be among the most popular railroads for modelers - I guess that is not true for the MTJ community. I think Carey has a few PRR relics, but not sure he has a host account. He has given me permission to post photos from his collection. Here is an M1a. I do not have its provenance tagged with the photo - maybe Carey lurketh?

Been there and also straightened out one of the axles to about 95% true. I like the little hitch in it,

That does seem to be the case. I have only a passing interest in the PRR due to an overlap of equipment and its ownership of the CVRR. My interest in it tends to wane after 1920.....

Early Walthers Crestline boxcar with the early solid brass frame. Oddly, I have managed to wrangle 4or 5 of these which is dandy since I am a PRR foamer lol.

At least I posed these on two rail track lol

Bob asked me to repost this over here, The I1 is a rough scratch built loco, all tin with an All Nation motor in it. I've since swapped tender trucks. The Belpaire is a little more square than I would like but it is what it is. The M1 is the Blumm, 17/64's loco with a Mi Loco K5 tender behind it. On the bottom are a couple of Saginaw locos, G5 and E6.
Image
Here a couple more projects, Bottom shelf is a Saginaw H10 with Brass wheels, two railed, and a Pratt 0-6-0. The next shelf has a fugly home made E6 and then what I think started out life as a Walthers Polydrive B6. I like this little loco, it has all the Walther's traits, domes, boiler front and Bronze tender frame.
Image
Third shelf up is a huge scratch built Pacific, to my eye it somewhat resembles the oddball K28/29 locos from 1911 prior to K4 development. So once I fix the missing drive, I plan to paint it for that specific engine. Last there is one of half a dozen Scale Craft K4's.
Image

I apologize I have projects versus finished or good running locos, but It's how I can play.
Here is another SC K4 with Boxpoc drivers.

Here are a couple more K4 projects I got recently, top is a cast Alexander boiler on a nice chassis I am not familiar with, different from the jewel quality Alex chassis... The bottom is an SC chassis with either a scratch boiler or something taken from another loco and modified, but is seems like a decent start.

Rookie, huh? You have more doorstops than do I. By a long shot!

This week it is time for my Decapod. I am quite proud of this thing; it started out pretty ugly, but then morphed into a very nice model.

Image

Lobaugh Berk frame, extended. CLW plastic (ugh) drivers, with NWSL gears. Scalecraft K4 boiler, scratch cab and tender. It still looks like a doorstop, but I think it is a step up from the average. Last time I checked it ran like a watch. Before I try it again the gearbox will come apart for inspection. I think it might have solid worm bearings.

Note that, unlike the real thing, it has all flanges. I have this aversion to blind drivers, and have maybe only two models with them. It could be that our flanges are so much bigger than the real thing scaled down that I choke on the appearance of a blind driver. In any case, even the 4-12-2 makes it around my widest curve.

Both of my H6's have the 2 center drivers blinded otherwise not going around my tight curves. The little 2-6-0 that came from Ed Reutling has a blinded driver...

In any case, even the 4-12-2 makes it around my widest curve.

What is that radius? Probably more than my layout room could accommodate,

The only models here with blind drivers are one Saginaw H10 and the Scale Craft SP Mountain. The Saginaw is among a fleet of about five in various stages of recovery, including two CLW that are essentially complete, and I am having a hard time getting to them. The Scale Craft came home last year for new driver tires, only to find that there is no room for full flanges - the wheelbase is too tight (and incorrect, for SP).

Maybe a quarter century ago I expanded my train shed by two feet and added a 74" radius loop. That was for the big 4-10-2 locomotives, all in 17/64 scale. It also made operating 80" Northerns possible, since the lead and trailing trucks foul up against the frames on any tighter radius.

You can see the four track main, including the 74" loop, on my You Tube channel, to which I need to add the 0-6-0 team I now have running.

As I suspected - not possible to fit that in my layout room,

I know so far, I got 54” rad and even Alex GG1’s don’t like it! The CLW 4-8-4 won’t think of it!! Lmao
