Recent Stout Auctions

Postby SWrailroader » Sat Oct 04, 2025 8:29 am

The recent Stout Auctions was kind of a KTM bonanza. I thought many of the prices were a real bargain, e.g. CB&Q 4-8-4 for $400 new condition. Others IHB 0–8-0 , new at $225, or. Painted GP-9 for $125. However, the articulated pieces were quite high ranging about $1500 for a challenger or AC-9.

I looked yesterday for the first time in months and I saw the same results. Certain roads that apparently don't have strong followings these days had bargains, but other roads (including UP) went for too much money IMHO. Except for a few exceptions I saw no real bargains. Stouts does pretty good getting top dollar out of items.

I understand, being local and talking to Greg and others who attend, there are a several high rollers that frequent those auctions. My best success was a 2023 scale auction where I brought home maybe six engines? Saginaw E6, well two if you count a box of parts for $60. Also got anotger saginaw H10 for cheap and a KTM M1 for $140 less tender. There were a few other things that came home that day.. mi-loco pullmans, some tank cars, oh and an Alexander GG1… I am waiting for a similar auction to appear!! I bid on the Lobaugh Greenbrier and berks but was in a meeting for work presenting ironically when those items went through. I put a bid but they went higher than I liked.

Dennis, does it seem people are buying to resell or to keep for themselves. The prices I've seen on the groups of plastic rolling stock that is sold is cheap enough to resell if that's your hobby.

It seems there are several lads that buy to resell and a few that come local so they don't need to ship. I think the lot of tankcars I got had 10-12 in it and was around 130 maybe, I don't remember. but a couple of Lobaugh, and I think 4 Max gray/KTM and a couple of other kit tankers. No plastic. The reefers seem to go for the most probably due to the colorful sides.

I'm finding really quick that I don't have the shelf space to give up to a couple hundred freight cars when there are steamers diesels and electrics and a growing number of passenger cars showing up.

But, due to the rocks in my head, I still pick cars up. Trying to limit to good Lobaugh or Alexander etc, stuff that strikes my fancy these days lol

It helps that I am probably more of a bottom feeder too, but I feel like I still have put together a pretty good collection of stuff. Carey has been a pretty darned good mentor in that sense.

Hi folks,

Apologies...I ended up with the Lobaugh J3a kit. Being a C&O nut, I couldn't pass up this historical kit. I agree that I probably overpaid for it. Now if only I could find a very well assembled one. I've really gotten fond of Lobaugh since picking up a 4-4-0 on a whim a couple years ago.

I ended up with some other C&O related stuff and a few of the models from the KTM bonanza as well.

Best,
Leonard

I suspect that the resellers spent most of their money on the HO and N stuff that were the first ~400 lots in the auction.

I agree with your observation that many of the prices of O-scale items were real bargains.

Two bargains you didn't mention were the four Northern Pacific Passenger Cars for $100 and the OMI-0343 New Haven PA-1 without Dynamic Brakes for $275.

The Sunset On3 D&RG K-28 for $250 might also have been a bargain, but I don't follow the On3 market well enough to know.

However, the articulated pieces were quite high ranging about $1500 for a challenger or AC-9.
I don't really follow steam prices, but these four articulated pieces seemed low to me:

OMI-0115 C&O H-8 2-6-6-6 for $675

OMI-0167 Z-8 SP&S 4-6-6-4 for $700

Precision Scale B&O EM-1 2-8-8-4 that sold for $725

OMI-0142 Great Northern L-1 2-6-6-2 for $325 (foam damaged)

I was most surprised by the NJ Custom RS-1 that sold for $975; that's $1,160 after the 19% commission!

I agree on the lower selling prices of the articulated models you listed. Unpainted throws a monkey wrench in the works for many who want RTR. C&O and NP seem to be roads taking price hits right now, just like PRR has for years.......and a lot of the same models are appearing on EB. And, 3rd Rail has some very nice RTR pieces in NP and C&O on EB, including a few of their "anniversary" line that are highly detailed for 3rd Rail. A lot of collections are being offered and the frequency just seems to go up. :(

The UP pieces seemed to be the $1500 and up and I saw more than a few bring way to much money in my estimation. The unptd "baby" turbines were good buys at $700+ IMHO.

OMI non articulated steam pieces have stout gearboxes but that is not true for the articulated ones. There was an article on this disparity in OST a couple years ago.
