Great stuff Carey as usual, quite a clever model of the Blue Goose, I love it when commercial sheet metal gets employed into model building. Nice runner too.

Apropos the Pomona Valley cars themselves; they appear to be made from common galvanized sheet steel as used for roof gutters, at least the ones in my pile do (two smooth sided '38 Broadway plans.) I don't have any of those Monel metal versions though, and am impressed that PV offered both Budd and PS with the (somewhat) appropriate rolled fluting for each builder. Rare attention to detail IMO for the time and sadly even now.

More with those wonderful PV catalogues; I'm curious if you've ever come across one of these twin EMC's which I think are the second version of the DZ Zephyr set? I consider them one of the few true "Holy Grail" door-stop locomotives, likewise what do you know about these?

I asked Carey to post these. I did not know they were Pomona Valley castings, but that makes sense:



This one is a UP truck. I found one side frame, had my dentist buddy do a rubber mold in "no shrink" stuff, sent Dennis and Kathy some waxes, and had several sets made. I don't know why, but I found them intriguing.



This one is a bit more crude - I did find some better versions a while back. Modelers refer to them as "Napoleon Hat" trucks. They are found under early streamline Pullmans, and solid journal versions were used on the SP Daylight. Lobaugh made a truly accurate (if sand cast and not delicately detailed) version of that, and I had some cast up with brake cylinders for my Daylight fleet. Most of the other available versions in O Scale have aspect ratio flaws, or in one case, inaccurate spring pads.

While I am at it, Minton Cronkhite was the guy who wanted Monel Metal. It tarnishes to a smoky color, but can be polished. I personally prefer aluminum extrusions, and now I know where to send the next Monel Metal cars I find.

These two went to Allan Wehrle, then I think to Maroon. I bet they wind up at Carey's place.



Carey and I are working on a DM&IR 2-10-2, presumably made by SMR. I will let the experts chime in on SMR (I think I got that right - the midwest company that was active in the late 1930s?). I just got it to play with siderods on - one of the drivers was mis-matched, both in crankpin distance and quarter. Tomorrow I try it with a Pittman. It would have possibilities, but the boiler is full of lead, and I am not sure it would ever come out. I have a Lobaugh Mike full of lead, and maybe I shall someday try to melt it out of there.

Hello all

Very nice Monel metal cars Bob .....they have a wonderful luster to them ...paint does not capture the stainless look ( in my book) .

Peter your "holy Grail" ....there was one of the Burlington Zephyr's featured on a cover of a magazine Craftsman ? In the early 50's ...so at least one is out there somewhere....
Next time I see the cover will send you a photo of it .

The Mikado ...scratch built using a Lobaugh Berkshire chassis and drivers as a base ..but open gearing ...runs well
Pulling Walther's streamlined corrugated passenger cars.....first listing ( I found ) for the thin metal corrugated sheeting ( to be added atop the standard Walther's flat sides ) 1951.

End result was why everyone bought Kainser cars .

Train rolls by Frank Ellison's Snug Harbor...a few newly acquired Delta Lines pieces .
