Interesting EB Item

Postby up148 » Fri Feb 24, 2023 8:42 am

This is interesting. A brand new WS UP Challenger with no chassis or drive. Can't imagine why someone would use only the chassis and power on another model. Also, where do you go from here with this model? IMHO, trying to locate what's missing would be almost impossible.

Might be an interesting back story there, but Bill sells stuff w/o too much of a problem. Probably someone out there that has a use for this item.

Oh, for sure. If I had a USH or WS Challenger that had any damage or a USH that needed cab detail and boiler upgrades, this would be a cheaper way to go (depending on selling price).

And I'd love to hear the backstory as well.

Probably under a Lionel or MTH boiler. I have actually done things like this, and wound up with nice Overland superstructures. You may not think such conversions make any sense, but remember, it is a hobby, and none of it makes sense to the majority.

Woody. You have no idea how many boilers and tenders, some painted, with no locomotive chassis there were.
No idea if this was one of his.

I put a Scale Craft mechanism under an MTH K4 for him. Did not get the spare boiler.

Yep, several somebodies wanted it for something. If I had a chassis and driver I would consider it well bought, otherwise not.

Hey gang! A truly dirtbag prewar Lobaugh Challenger is now on the eBay for around $2500! I am impressed! I shall get a link - had to change computers to post this.
Short story - prewar UP Challenger with what looks like a cast C&O cab. No boiler bands. Center rail rollers. All Nation Mountain tender with very rusty wheels.

Yeah - go here:

I should add that the $4500 IMP Challenger is still available, after six months of being on discount at $4500.

Yeah, more totally train ignorant sellers who are looking for a killing. When I do my brass searches (every day) it pulls up some very high priced HO Overland Models items. They are new, but the prices are way above the market. Trains, classic cars or any item that a seller is trying to make a killing on is a real pet peeve with me. Just another form of dishonesty. :(

The CLW Northern is not really the greatest model, but it can be modified to resemble a UP FEF-1. Mine came from Milt Sorensen, of Idaho and 48/ft fame when Dan Henon ran the place. I think I traded a couple AHN C-Liners for the kit.

The biggest flaw is the wheelbase on this one - too much space between drivers. The actual model needs serious boiler and firebox modifications to get this far. Best tender for this one is the Scale Craft aluminum body over a Lobaugh truck.

But the reason I am posting - You can get a complete kit (as of right now) on eBay. A noted seller has taken what appears to be a 100% complete kit, and separated it into four auctions, each stating "incomplete." Total so far for all four is about $210, with no bids. I personally think this is not a great kit, even with all the pieces, but am guessing that if he put it all back together in its original boxes he could get $300. I also think a person would have to be nuts to start bidding, hoping to get all four for a reasonable price.

Same seller just sold a Lobaugh Challenger Centipede tender for right around $130. Near as I can figure it did not have wheels - still a good deal if you have a Challenger locomotive missing a tender. Good luck, though, on finding Lobaugh 42" wheelsets. Glad he did not separate that one into incomplete kits.

Interesting. I'm getting ready to build a FEF-2 out of the MG/USH FEF-3 loco I've mentioned here. I just ordered a PSC drop couple pilot that I believe will work nicely with some additional work and fortunately the later -2's used the UP double stack so I'm good there. Kudos to Aaron for bringing this pilot to my attention.

If this project goes well, I'd like to build a FEF-1 with single stack. It has 77" drivers and I would have to use the 80" drivers from the USH models.

The next hurdle will be converting this -2 conversion to coal. There are no guts inside the stock oil tender, so I either have to totally fabricate the coal internals or stumble across a coal centipede tender on EB or somewhere.
