Jon, I think that is the "Collector" bid speaking. I don't know that much about 3 rail (and a lot of other things for that matter   ) but I think there were not all that many of the clear body shells made.
Note the estimate.

Meh...
People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Don't forget - Michael Jackson's dirty clothes sell for more than that. Some folks just have so much money it makes no difference what things cost.

just watch some of the car shows.

Oh, yes, missus duncan....we can rebuild this POS Chevelle with an LS engine versus your original numbers matching 235 cube inline six and powerslide...four link, power everything...for $240K.

Oh, you bought a 1957 Choveitorleaveit off evilbait and it's junk? We can build you a new body, new frame, new drivetrain....and you $30K car is now worth $225K...or, that what you have into it.

Reality probably is it's still worth $30K tops.

It's really hard to comprehend the amount of ready cash some folks seem to have....

OK Bob! Here's the scam: We get some guy named Michael Jackson (gotta be plenty of them out there, not like the name Englebert Humperdinck) and we get a bunch of his old socks and put them on Feebay

Then we rent the dump trucks to take the money to the bank

SOME PEOPLE ARE NUTS!

Check out Teodorin Obiang. There’s a dude with way, way too much money, compliments of Exxon Mobil.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll have that problem, but there is evidently a point where the loot is coming in faster than a person can spend it, so it becomes irrelevant what one spends. I would like to take a whack at that scenario for a year or two. I'm sure I've made some bad buys along the way, but the great bulk of it had some utilitarian value, and I've managed to pay my bills to date.

Bob, Your boy is a pauper compared to Jeff Bezos (Amazon)

Amazon's founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos was the first person in modern history to accumulate a fortune of over $100 billion — and he currently has a net worth of $110 billion, Bloomberg estimates.Oct 25, 2019

Yeah, but Bezos is just piling it up. Sure, maybe he had a mistress, but I think he is more interested in his work than in how to spend gazillions. The weird ones are the ones with no life skills and lots of money. They do get all the girls, I guess.

Back to the clear body Lionel loco. Supposedly built for salesmen for some kind of demonstration.
It is of no interest to me. Even if I had the $$$$$$$.

All the gold diggers. I do recall a show where a guy married this chick and didn't reveal untill after the fact that he was loaded. He knew she wasn't marrying for the loot. Smart guy.

I remember folks painting those shells before repro shells became available.
Big issues, if I recall, are yellowing and sagging of the roof.
