Martin is correct - and today you can patent new applications of well understood mechanisms or procedures just like in 1929, but the process now includes a complex and costly prosecution phase. You submit, they deny, you argue, they deny, you argue again, they approve. The fees are hefty, which is why I did not patent my twin spool power design. I could have avoided all the attorney fees - I am registered.

As in, jet engines? I've heard that pharmaceutical companies have been making minor changes to out-of-patent medicines, and re-patenting them. I smell patent law changes, by rich psychopaths.

Minor changes that have to achieve a significant improvement that adds benefit or an unexpected advantage. It's not easy getting a patent and it costs some serious money to prosecute and then to also maintain. You don't just fill out a form and drop it in a slot and a patent magically pops out. Can take years to be issued if at all. I have one that's been in this process now for at least 5 years.
The patent law changes that have been kicked about for many years are from the opposite of your so-called "rich psychopaths". They're from patient advocacy groups and drug costs groups. The opposition to the changes are from your so-called "rich psychopaths" seeking to protect their bottom lines.
Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple.

Well, good for them.
Patent law should be functional. It's a good idea: reward those who develop ideas into functional designs, so that we all may be able to benefit from these solutions. Too bad, that the Chinese government is acting like Pakleds.

We do not see the text of the patent. All the numbered items, drawn items...the patent appears to be for a "Toy or Model Locomotive". Boiler bands? Screws? And the patent, while Rufus says is valid, shows spur and crown gears, no gear reduction....so is the patent from 1926 invalid for the model shown, or is the model shown not an Egolf? Or was there another patent that allowed for secondary gear reduction?

You'd have to go get a copy of the patent - should be reasonably available off the USPTO web site - the issued patent number is on the previous page.
You can also search the patents by inventor name there as well.

I could do that. Or, since Carey seems to have the paperwork in hand, figured he would post it.

We'll see if he does. I'm pretty much done trudging through patent lit unless I'm under contract as a consultant and getting paid.

I have done it before. Didn't like it then, and since the sheet shown by Carey is Page 1 (2 Sheets-Sheet 1) he probably has the second sheet.

Filed in 1922 and issued in 1926. Seems like nothing has changed on the pace of getting a patent issued,

Re: More dirtba - er, Doorstops
I just skimmed the text quickly. Doesn't seem to reference the gears, but rather, emphasizes the ability to remove the motor and other parts, for ease of maintenance and repair.

Re: More dirtba - er, Doorstops
Doesn't make any difference at this late date, except you cannot patent the same thing.
In the 1960s I submitted a patent and it was granted without prosecution, and without a search. You cannot do that now - and as Martin says, they keep charging you!
If you invent something for an aircraft, you can get a "Supplemental Type Certificate". Not cheap, but once granted it is good for ever, and the feds will prosecute violators for you.

I remember seeing something about the guy who came up with the automotive windshield wiper. Spent most of his life suing the car companies, but finally won. Justice delayed, is justice denied.

Read it. Crimeny. It's just for a model toy locomotive. Bent tabs, screws, wooden boiler.
"Any type of gearing may be employed to transmit power from the flexible shat to the driving axle."
So, the patent is for construction for ease of maintenance, NOT a patented drive system.
