Pete -- thanks for posting those links. The Frisco, Wabash, and C&NW examples are all handsome locomotives, assuming that one likes them all dolled up like that. I do, but only to a point -- I really like modeling the bread-and-butter workhorses like the NdeM version instead. Did you cherry pick those to show off the best of the litter, or were there so few that the streamlined examples were representative?

Believe it or not the C&NW's and Wabash were built with the shrouding and wore it to the knacker.
I prefer the au natural look too. NdeM's class indeed had a nice appearence, note the short tenders and big headlights, also and unlike virtually most others (AT&SF, CP notwithstanding) NdeM preserved at least one of them.

C&NW's had nine of these monsters and I believe they used exclusively for Overland Service on the Chi-Omaha main until downgrading to commuter service in their last two years.

The Frisco's were rebuilt from Pacifics, there were 10 of them and (I think) only three were were shrouded. They had their boilers enlarged when they were rebuilt and were quite powerful, again they look a lot nicer without the shrouding as per attached link (hubba-hubba)

The Wabash's seven (fairly conventional aside from the smoke deflectors, side skirt and loud blue and white scheme !) were used on passenger trains, and only lasted about 10 years in service.

I am getting close on the restoration of my ScaleCraft Hudson. Here it is as of last night, ready for a layout test later this week:

Once I know the locomotive runs without problems then I will finish the paint job. The tender is, as best I can tell, a scratch-build, but of course if anybody recognizes it as something else, please let me know. It's nicely built, and I am not too bothered by the lack of rivets.

The eagle eyes out there may have noticed that there is something missing from the top of the boiler:

I am not an expert on steam and wasn't quite sure what was missing, but I found a few photographs of the original instruction drawing for this model. The drawing shows the missing piece:

Anybody know what this part is?

By the way, a friend located a suitable replacement for the rear wheelset of the trailing truck, which I mentioned in this thread a week or so ago. Rufus, thanks for the tip on Bill Davis. I never had to call him but that was a good idea.

Oh, and one last thing: again, the eagle eyes may have noticed the odd steam dome in the second photo. The model came from the factory with a rotating steam dome as a reverser. Somebody had removed it and mounted what looks like the business end of a carriage bolt. It was not perfect but I decided to clean it up a bit by filling the imperfections and sanding it smooth rather that replace it. I will prime this area and re-evaluate, but so far I am ok with it.

A friend contacted me offline to inform me that the missing item is the whistle. That makes sense, but I just hadn't seen one with a bracket like that shown in the drawing. Anybody know what style of whistle would be used here? PSC sells a couple of dozen different models:

As a guess, Leslie 5 chime, there on the bottom. But if brass is ok, I can make one like the original Scale Craft if you want. Just a crude, oversize turning. I think the original is nickel silver.
