Cast 17/64ths caboose ..by who ???

Hello O scale world ...

Trouble in the Mi-Loco and Mini-Scale world .... you had great engines , marvelous passenger cars , 3 beautiful freight cars ..and no caboose .. in one of Lee B Green ads he lists a caboose .... not shown ... no caboose listed in the catalog.... this is in the days before a flashing FRED was appropriate.....so what to do ? ...a 1/4 scale Scalecraft or Walthers ..looks tiny behind the 17/64ths freights ....

Up pops this all cast aluminum ( save wood cat walk and built up sheet metal steps) caboose ... (sorry shown with 1/4 scale trucks ) ....

Crovan , Acme, Alexander, all offered various cast cars .. none show this caboose ....

hand lettered....the perfect crummy to lash behind a string on cast mi-loco / mini-scale freights being pulled by a NYC Hudson or PRR K4......I'm sure they interchanged back in the day on those through trains from LA to NYC.

Any ideas as to who made this caboose ? ...

Carey - You didn't mention it but the sides don't match. So now, who made each of them?

That's because its prototype had different windows on each side. Looks like ATSF, but could have been an attempt at an SP or generic western.

Cabeese were so small - maybe that All Nation cast caboose is 17/64?

Guesses...based upon what I see.

SC trucks, screw mounted. Not sure on frame..yet. Strap brass steps, folded and soldered. Roof end ends screwed on.....looks like a SC roof, but heck, could be Walthers roof stock.
Are the ends cast or wood? I see screws holding the sides to the ends.

Roofwalk is from somewhere..with added straps on the roof for places not provided. Not prototypical:

A little research shows several H0 outfits liked the "generic" 1951 number. Here is one:

uh...no.

For some reason there is a spurious wood side photo...maybe a 1/4" reference for size. The close-ups are of cupola left, but the long shot on a shelf shows 1951 steel side cupola right.

Both appear to have been painted with a coarse roller.

Ah...wait....saved, blown up, appears the roof is die cast.

They key may very well be the five simulated rivets in a row where the body for the prototype was rivetted to the frame bolster.

Find one like that...may just have it.
But: The slot-head, flat-head screws are almost a giveaway for Alexander, are they not?

Where did you get it, and did it have KaDees when you got it...and what kind of distinguishing characteristics did those KaDees have?

I have two of the mates, same car, same decals, same number series, same fine coal glued in......

Hello all and Dave...

The caboose sides, roof, ends, floor & coupla appear to be sand cast aluminum .

So smooth texture is relative to the sand used.

Alexander was a dyed in the wool advocate 1/4" er

The similar offset caboose shown in the Alexander catalog details sheet metal sides. The Alexander center coupla model was cast aluminum and 1/4"..

So still in the unknown column.

Hopper...Mini ~ Scale ....purchased last year from Arthur ...I can check couplers tomorrow night......hope they are not Kadees...as I find them the black mold of the vintage O scale world.

Now...the chances of three ancient four bays, painted the same, same glued-in fine coal loads, with exactly the same decals down to position and reporting marks are somewhat astronomical, wouldn't you say?

Mine came with KaDees, and you may notice the air hoses are painted fire engine red. Only ones in my possession like that.

This is odd.

I got mine in Seattle for a price I like.
Burner wouldn't, but oh, well.

I can do more photos if you'd like.
All four trucks are ScaleCraft.

These cars, for my mostly steam and early diesel era pile, need to be stripped and painted/lettered for something more in line with that.

Almost forgot..mine have what appears to be dry transfer numbers on the bottom...1009 on one, 1017 on the other. May have matched a number in a roster sheet. Cannot imagine over 1,000 pieces of rolling stock, but you never know.

Hello Dave ....that is very odd.....I believe mine has original Mini~ Scale trucks and couplers ....price paid would reflect that....
Yes the lettering has got to go ...fine for some Atlas piece...but not a 1938 hopper ...what were they thinking ?

I have a less than stellar original paint / lettering example ..that shall be used as a sample to find matching lettering....I can post a photo tomorrow night..

So...look at an Alexander side..see if the five rivets in a row are present at the bolster....is there any evidence the roof has been filled where the cupola was...or is the Alexander rood even cut out for center cupola or solid as most were...and how hard would it be to make this from existing parts....

photo of the Mini-Scale Hopper ..with correct original lettering and offensive modern graphics ..both with proper trucks and couplers

Caboose .... all cast cupola ...roof is all cast with walk boards bordering the cupola......so no options as to where to place parts ...cat walk , railings etc added to castings ..what you see is what you get ...no variations... naturally there are no markings of any sort on the castings ...
you could be creative as you wished, as long as you followed the instructions
