Dave, those look like KTM gearboxes, which means threaded axles. My guess is that somebody used a pair of pliers to remove the wheels -- maybe to reduce the wheel diameter. As documented somewhere on this forum (US Hobbies GP-7 thread, I think), I custom cut a pair of wood blocks to squeeze the wheels on these without marring them. There are other solutions, I'm sure -- specifically, other solutions that don't involve a pair of pliers.
