Butch...I also love the simplicity of the early Vettes. Your looks might fine to me...interior is beautiful, and that motor is too. Find that Hardtop... I would own a first gen for sure but you can't just go buy one unless your wallet is well organized. There mechanical simplicity is a desirable attribute compared to my sixth gen, which is also a remarkable machine with few equals power band wise. I'm a year older than you Butch, but I still enjoy cranking this machine to life and doing a 100 miles of two lanes for no reason other than the pure exhilaration of such a machine.

Yes Robert,

The C-6/C-7's are remarkable machines and very similar in many respects. We're kind of homebodies to just tooling around early on a weekend morning for 25, 35 or maybe is about all we like. We have to drive in the traffic everyday to the office so going for a cruise later is not appealing to us. Top down, cruising in the country is what we are after.

Funny thing on C-1's. The cost (at least this spring) is coming down (maybe the graying of that group, just like in O scale) and it appears the C2's are the ones holding their price. Lot's of modified cars for less, but many have been worked on by so many bubba's that it's really hard to tell what you're buying.

I can't think of a group of cars that is more likely to have been modified that the Corvette. One has to be very informed before you go shopping for them. The C2's are a very tempting group, but better watch out for the shysters who have rebuilt lousy cars into for sale specials...with more numbers matching car than were ever actually manufactured by GM...crazy market for sure. I like your car Butch, glad it brings a smile.

It's a fulfillment of a life long dream and I just hope it doesn't turn into a nightmare.

Only driven 5 miles so far, as the carb had to be rebuilt and at least the temp gauge has to work. Hoping to do a little cruising this holiday weekend.

Took it out on it maiden voyage yesterday and it did well. Has lots of oil drips so I have to see what's leaking. Hopefully something simple and I already put on new valve cover gaskets hoping to solve this leak, but that is not the case.

Butch - early Ford engines could get the crankshaft seals replaced by simply dropping the pan. Hopefully the Chevy engine, which by some accounts was better than the 289, is just as easy.

Lots of folks like the Chev 350, but that Ford 289 is a really tough engine to beat. I had a '66 Bronco with a 289 in it; my what a brilliant engine it was. The 289 is on my list of all-time great American engines, with the Ford Flathead, Ford Model A, and the Chev Stovebolt Six.

pertrolheads...never been called that before...but always been one...just something real energizing about stirring up excessive horsepower with a multispeed shifting mechanism in my right hand.

Sorry, Robert, me ol' friend. The risk inherent in being bi-lingual and not really thinking. A petrolhead is a "gearhead" or a "car-guy" in America.

Back to Vettes, I must admit not really having been a fan, though I do enjoy seeing a nice one. I might be the only man on the planet who favours the C3 above all others, a very elegant form to my eye. That does dubb me out as not being a knowledgeable guy about the breed. Grin!
