Never drove a Diesel locomotive. I have flown many airplanes with long skinny obstructions in front of the pilot and near the windshield. Your focus is elsewhere.

The wipers on a 737 are so noisy they can be a distraction on a rainy night approach.

Locomotives are operated, not driven.

A lot of times i don't use wipers. My international does better without them. They smear the rain across the windshield. Rains rolls off the glass better. I need them more to clear away fog/dew from temperature change. My truck has a bad windshield design. On the edges it has a drop off. Those wipers slap up and down a lot. You can see scratches were the land and bounce around. I have had a handful of replacements and all are the same. With so many fine scratches rain wont clear away well . Plus those fine scratches wear out wiper pretty fast.
I spend entirely too many hours a day tying my shoes

You might want to try Rainex

That's what I was thinking. We had some exotic stuff that worked like magic, but it had to be raining or it made a mess. I think it was just FAA approved Rainex, not sure.
And for Tom - yeah, when some sexy girl asked what we did for a living in the overnight hotel restaurant, we'd say "heavy equipment operators." They were heavy . . .
