That sounds like the resin the Wiseman uses......I can smell the resin in his kits when I take the box out of the mailbox!

Yep, Keith is doing them now. To many issues with his Illinois caster. Don't know how he roped into building the shells.

Interesting information on the castings/caster.

Assembly…Maybe Paul Hecht? Dunno, but $30 to have it built is a steal considering the time to clean the flash and square stuff up, but then I'm assuming whoever he uses is good at it.

If you have bubbles on the back of the castings like you show, then no biggie, the front is what matters. Not worth your time to fill those.

#76 bits and #78 bits are what I have sitting in tubes. I forget what the 78 was for, but the 76 is definitely .02" wire and/or tichy grabs. Maybe I'll get back to freight car kit building by the new year. Too many loco's eating up my workbench real estate. Good news is my 3rd Rail SD9's are finished, so 2 down.

If the castings are still outgassing, the paint may not stick. I had this problem with TT Scale castings from Australia, I'd apply a coat of primer, let it dry for a week, then apply a coat of paint and the paint would peel two weeks later. What was happening was the outgassing would build up under the primer coat, stretch and crack the primer and paint coat, and off it came. I stripped the shell fairly ruthlessly, and let it sit for about six months, and then started over.

That smell of the resin he uses is hard to mis-identify; don't know what it is or the source, but it's not one I'll use in my shop - have to put in a dedicated exhaust system to use that stuff.

I filled in the holes, sanded the parts down, and gave them another bath. If they still smell of resin I'll let them sit a while longer.

Very useful info from davejfrO above. I think that sharing is what these forums are/should be all about--modelers helping modelers.

As to trucks, the photo of the prototype car shows what appear to be AAR 50-ton trucks. Bettendorf Co in Iowa was but one manufacturer; several other firms made the same style of truck. Several O scale manufacturers offer/ed trucks with that style sideframe: All Nation, Athearn, Atlas, Lobaugh, Walthers & Weaver, among others.
