What are all of those blobs along the tracks?

Blobs? Those are the heads of roofing nails driven into the ply 3/4 plywood. The rail is steel, hand laid and soldered to the "blobs". I dislike spikes, and this way the rail stays put. I guess I should color them dark.

when the wood shrinks over time, there'll be a sagging floor above it.

The steel I beams run the full length of the house and are held up by welded pipe set into concrete pads. The 6x6's were used to hold everything up while they welded it. They just left them in place.

To me, it is reminiscent of the style of the late John Armstrong's pike. I like it a lot.

More and better pictures of Allan's switching layout. Like everything he did, it featured unusual and unique construction techniques. Allan was a true free spirit, for better or worse unencumbered by the usual ways of doing things.
