SUNNYSIDE SHOPS O SCALE PRR T-1 Duplex

Postby danielrmason » Wed Jul 05, 2017 3:53 pm

I have one of these remarkable engines and would like to get as much information on the model from anyone that was the importer,has owned, repaired one or who knows someone that has, especially how to lubricate the gear boxes, running/operational issues and any modifications or repairs that were required. My goal is to run the engine 0n 80-84 radius curves. I have seen the ads and some information on the engine in O Scale News Vol. 13-14 1983 and 1984.

Thank you.

Dan;

I'd suggest popping over to the OGR 2-rail forum and getting in contact with Ed Rappe ("Keystone Ed"). I believe he is very familiar with them.

I can tell you Sunnyside was a short-lived importer whose speciality was highly detailed Pennsy stuff. In addition to the T they also did a very complex coach in brass, was it a P85? They were very high end for the day, and complexity sometimes made operation a challenge.

Brian;
Thanks for the referral. I also have 3 of the Sunnyside coaches and agree with your comments.

Question for Sarge: Sunnyside was a bit before my re-entry to the hobby. Seems to me I have heard Steve Grabowski's name associated with Sunnyside....just wondering if that is correct? I know he imported as "Keystone".

Thanks,
Rich

I don't know that Steve was financially involved; my guess would be no although I could easily be surprised on that one. At that time, he was heavily involved consulting (for PSC for one) with importers on Pennsy projects and doing some interesting domestically made kits, such as what was at the time the definitive X29 (a great kit in brass; I enjoyed building them), tender doghouse kits, and retrofit kits to upgrade the appearance of the USH I1 with proper sized airtanks, later rods, and other bits.

I really don't remember who the principles were for Sunnyside, if I'm honest.

My question derived from seeing "Sunnyside" N5c cabooses pop on Ebay now and again and seeing the name Grabowski used in some of their descriptions. Made me curious if there was an actual connection. As for the T1, I have never seen the Sunnyside version, only Custom Brass, Weaver, and Williams.

Thanks again!

Fran Pfiel. There's a name I haven't heard for a long time!

Some of the confusion might be the N5c. Steve made a brass kit for them, too; as accurate as they come in that era and needing no apology today. I had a couple over the years; built up you could see his name inside the centre sill.

I wonder if people now-a-days are confusing the two, when they see "Grabowski" under a model in hand.

A Pennsy guy could do far worse than scoring a couple of Steve's own kits. Look for his name on the sill. Incredibly, there was an upgrade kit for the X29, aimed at the true neurotic. The regular doors were good, but the upgrade doors had probably thirty pieces per door and were absolutely wonderful.
